Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ipods and cycling

I know listening to your ipod while you cycle is a no no but what is you just put in one headphone. That way you can hear traffic and listen to you tunes.

I have used iPod while riding but it was mostly on a roads where you see one car every 15 minutes. When going along a route with more traffic I would skip the iPod.

For a time, at the beginning of my return to cycling, I wore one side of a radio earplug set. I figured I could hear both the radio and traffic. While I suppose that turned out to be technically or biologically true, I found I could not actually listen to both.

I keep my iPod at a volume where I can still hear the rumble of engines and it's more a noise that I remember than anything else. I like having songs with a decent tempo that I can cycle to.

I have an Ipod, and have tried riding while listening once, it's awesome! However because I like to be intune to my surroundings, I only tried it this once.

I wish I could let myself use it more, but I can't, it's just my priorities.

I remember when I was a much younger tad and life was so much simpler, Cassette Walkmans had just come out. I use to love riding with that on in the evenings. That way I could be more aware of cars just by the headlights

i ride mainly along a river trail so I listen to my ipod all the time, just in the right ear with the volume pretty low. My rides would be a lot shorter if I didn't have it.

I use my Ipod everytime I ride solo. I use only a right side plug and I have no issues with hearing the music and the outside noises. I dont blast the volume but it is at more of a background volume. I hear a lot more outside noise than I do when I am in my car with the radio on or on my motorcycle over the exhaust and full face helmet.

I bike with my Ipod Mini all the time with no problem. I usually have both ear plugs in as well. I just feel that if you’re going to have an Ipod/CD player that you should be responsible for the level of volume you play it at and at which where you use it. My ride does consist of some busy intersections and urban streets but I am fully aware of my surroundings and remain cautious.

The only time I took my iP I drenched it with sweat. Do they make them waterproof?

I ride with an iPod in one ear, my cell bluetooth ear bud in the other, a helmet cam on my head, Groucho Marx glasses so I can't be identified when I run red lights through red-light camera intersections, a heart rate monitor on my chest, a beeper clipped onto my belt, a leg strap securing my levi's from flapping around the chain and wear a pair of those kids shoes with the flashing red lights just to look cool at night... I've been looking for a club to join but seem to get a cold shoulder from everyone when I join their group rides.

Geez.... you guys are too funny.

Depending on which IPod you bought, you should have a optional arm band you can buy where you can strap it around your arm and the IPod it self has a protective plastic over it to keep it from getting wet or damaged.

That's nothing I carry a boombox with my front handlebar basket. Sure it's heavy, but worth it when I blast past cars blazing 2pac.

I have not found one yet. I just snipped off the left side of a cheap walmart set it works fine. Since it is just background music and I am not jamming it, I really dont miss the missing leftside info.

OK, thanks... coffee now spewed all over my monitor and keyboard

I don't know if I could get into the 1 channel sound. It would not even be mono, for your missing half the signal, that would be too weird, I would rather do with out. I suppose a person could encode the MP3 as a mono signal, however that would be too much of a rigamaroll....

I ride with my iPod Shufle all the time. In Solo for sure, when I do my TT's... I just listen at a low volume. I figure, if a car is going to hit my from behind I don't want to hear it anyway!?! Not really sure why riding with an iPod is a no no.

I hang mine around my neck so I have easy access to it.

I don't have an iPod - I'm not that cool! But I have one of the very first mp3 player (a rio pmp300), I use cheap earbuds that let a lot of the ambient sounds go thru (the better the earbuds the more the isolate and keep you from earing incoming car - keep that in mind) which i drive at barely odible sound level; I never had a problem with that setup.

I've got an iRiver 20GB player and some Shure E2C noise isolating earbuds... not the best for hearing cars coming up on you, but I only use them when I'm doing rides that are on the bike path. Fortunately, I've got miles upon miles of bike path right outside my door.

Hot tip #1: Dont check out the reflection of your new bike in a mirrored shopfront window. Ok there shouldnt have been any cars cause they just changed the road layout but going OTB still clipped in onto the bonnet of a car wasnt fun..

Hot tip #2: Dont click autofill on your shuffle, heading up our local climb listening to Joy Division when up pops Doris Day.... any momentum instantly gone!!!
Yeah dont ask why Doris Day is on my iTunes....
