I used to ride only roads. City and country. Now only during group rides. Over the past ten years OKC has been building a really great network of trails mostly designed and paid for by cyclists. Its about 50% complete now. When done it will be a complete loop around the city with some extra "arms" and will be over 100 miles. I can get to the trail from my house using residential streets and the trail section completed on my side of town circles the lake where we keep our sailboat so I can check on it while I'm out.

Road only. Too many kids, walkers, skaters, dogs, you name it, on paths. Road bike speeds are too fast for safe use of trails. Danger to yourself and danger to others if riding high teens, low 20 mph range on a bike path. I use paths when I take my son, who is 4 for a ride on his training wheels.

Good MUP's and trails around here. Most rides are a combination.
Some MUP's are lightly used compared to others. If a MUP is too crowded I'll switch to roads if they go where I want.

Most bike trails are a pain, for all the reasons given. BUT there's a bike trail only a few minutes' drive from where I live, the San Gabriel River Trail, that really works well: it's in the middle of nowhere, and passes through few settled areas on its way to the coast. So practically no pedestrians or little kids, and not even a lot of casual cyclists. A lot of guys in team kit work out on it. I do find it a relief not to have to worry about rush hour, or crazy drivers sometimes.

I don't ride mountain bikes for the same reason I don't ride trails: too lazy to drive to them. Roads 100%.

I agree. Driving to a trail wastes time and gas. There is a road right outside my front door.

I really only use MUPs for transportation purposes (e.g. part of my commute). If I'm out riding for the sake of riding, I'll usually be on the road. That being said, the NYC Century makes heavy use of MUPs... so when I'm riding that century, a good mix!

I ride a combo of roads and trails. I live in Germany and drivers seem to respect those of us on bike more than they do in the states. I lived in Kansas and San Antonio for a combo of 5 years and was clipped 4 times by drivers. In Texas, I think it was something of a sport for truck drivers to see how close they could get their rear view mirrors to us while we were on the road.

My favorite ride is from my home in Wiesbaden, through the 1000 year old city of Mainz, and 30 miles up the Rhein river to Rudesheim. Half of the rise is on roads, the other half on paved bike trails.

Hey Steve I voted for all but track as I ride on all of them. I do, however, prefer the road. The roads around here (Trenton NJ) are not the greatest so I do alot of riding around the local college campus on the road that surrounds it. It is about a 1 1/2 mile loop and I typically do about 20-30 laps. It does get boring but the surface is good and the scenery (read, girls) can brighten up the ride a bit. I like the D & R Canal towpath near my house but I ride my MTB on that. I much prefer riding my roadie on the road whenever I can, which is often enough.

I have been along those roads when I was on vacation in Germany back in 2000. I am soooooooo jealous. I would have loved to have had my roadie on that trip. If I ever go back, the bike is coming with me. I fell madly in love with Rudesheim and also with Oberwessel. I envy you.

I'm doing about 60-75 miles during week on road and then on Sat. or Sun. I try and get 30-40 on road / trail combo. Like I said in other post I was on trail for maybe 15 miles Sunday and saw 40-50 roadies, guys in groups, full kits, aerobars, just haulin a$$. I hooked up with a guy on a 6/13 and shared pulls all the way home. We didn't say alot but he sure made my ride easier.

I do roads only. We don't have any paved trails, and I like to ride from my front door. We have great MTB trails in the area, but I don't have a mountain bike (yet).

Before I bought my roadie, I stayed on the limestone trails. There is one here that has giant driveway rocks, which is a killer. That's when I decided to look into road cycling because I like to push myself and also keep a consistent pace.

That's hard to do one trails because there's casual people on them who just want to see the sights and get a little exercise. It's a pain for everyone if I'm breathing down their necks.

I really enjoy road cycling as long as I can find stretches without so many cars. I have a pretty decent 30-50 mile route that includes 10 miles or so on busy roads.

Before I got my road bike, I thought about buying a mountain bike. I visited a local trail and almost broke my neck. I was sliding all over the place and one monster crash on my tailbone was enough. I like trails that are a little bumpy, but I'm not hip to bunny hopping or crashing everytime I go out.

I like the speed and repitition of road cycling on the road. On a good road that is. Around here there are some real stinkers, and that can ruin things.

Road, meaning metro areas, some heavy downtown type action, hardly ever the park system unless on a group ride; never on trails or bike paths.

I commute on roads but like riding on the local trails where there are long stretches, no intersections, and no having to unclip to stop at an intersection.
