Sell Complete or Part out?
 

I've got a Dean Multisport bike that I need to sell and I'm not sure if it would be easier and/or more profitable to sell it whole or break it up for parts. It's a 2000 vintage, aluminum frame (~56cm), CF fork, full Dura Ace, HED 3 spoke tubular wheels. Listed it on Craigslist, had some interest but no deals yet. It's in great shape and a nice bike. Haven't listed it anyplace else yet, but do have someone who is interested in just the wheels.

Pay $25 to register and advertise it for sale in that forum. Wait, sorry, you already advertised it here.

Easier to sell as complete bike.

I just sold parts from my $25 garage sale bike for total of $40. And it was only three small parts, not the whole bike. So selling parts will get you more money. You just have to ask yourself if the time you put into disassembling your bike, packing parts, going to postal office is worth the extra $$.

If you make the buyer pay the shipping and the packing, you won't lose any money. Its a little extra work, but you can make a few extra bucks. Cars are worth around 3x in parts (hence the chop-shops)

The question has mostly come up since I have someone who is really interested in buying just the HED wheels. I have another set of training wheels ( not the little kind of course) that I could put on it. Wasn't sure if it would make it harder to sell the bike without the HEDs and if there was a market for the Dura ACe stuff from a few years back.

Check ebay to see how much you can get for the parts. Be prepared though that you will have to ship a lot of packages if you take the bike apart. I did charge buyer for the shipping and handling but had to get the boxes (trip to Staples) and make few trips to post office because you will not get all the payments at once.

Parting out will likely take more time, and you'll probably end up with parts that nobody wants to buy. That's how it usually goes when I part out computers to sell online...

Never hurts to have a few spare parts though.

A few hours ebay research and internet site searches will help you see how much you can get for parts.

The wheels are in good shape, but that much? They are about the year 2000 vintage as well, but low miles. Because of the age I was thinking in the $400-500 range for the set. Maybe I'm way off?

The wheels came with the bike.
