Lance may go for #8 now. . .thank the French!

Here is a thought - given the accusations made about Lance doping and how angry he appears at them, might this be enough to 'force' him back for an 8th? Really stick it to the French? This also gives a nice cover for his "not going to race again" - he can now say that given the accusations he must race again for his honor?

Thoughts?

ibrown 08-25-05 12:29 PM

While all the accusations may really bug him, I don't think he will be lured back out. He just has to clear his good name. If he did win the 8th, they would just say the same,"He doped to win the 8th too...."

jslopez 08-25-05 12:34 PM

yeah he's already created his legacy (would suck though if the accusations were true). Going for 8 and winning would not stop the accusations, losing would then have the "I told out so" response.

dahvaio 08-25-05 12:47 PM

It is terrible about these accusations... The samples are 6 years old and it should be up to Equipe(?) to prove that there was no tampering of the samples... I think it is wrong to do this now... Furthermore, the Director of the Tour... what a joke...

cycleprincess 08-25-05 12:48 PM

Na...I think he's finished.

Chucklehead 08-25-05 12:55 PM

a real superhero would take some coaxing, but he'd eventually come out and fight. too bad lance isn't real.

???

Lance is staying put. He knew when his time came and retired at just the right time. What would racing another year accomplish? Nothing.

hes not real... HES A ROBOT!

KrisPistofferson 08-25-05 01:02 PM

That would be completely awesome, especially if he followed each stage win with pelvic thrusts and two upraised middle fingers for the L'Equipe photographers. Oh, and speaking as someone who collected comic books in their childhood, there are no such thing as superheroes. Hate to disappoint anyone.

Don Gwinn 08-25-05 01:12 PM

The superhero angle makes sense. If Galactus returns and threatens to devour the Earth unless Lance faces him in a one-on-one time trial, he'd probably do it.

Otherwise, I imagine he'll stay retired and have a chuckle while shopping for gold toilet plungers crusted with diamonds.

Don Gwinn,

Hey shoot for at least 10 unassisted pull-ups... trust me... once you drop the weight.. and work-out a little, you should have no problems... Pull-ups is a great measure of upper body strength...

sunninho 08-25-05 01:30 PM

Why go through all the spectacle again just to prove a point? ....Unless, he's riding to make up for the first victory which may soon have an asterix attached to it.

I can do 10 unassisted pull-ups easily and I consider myself to have very little upper body strength :-/

What a crock of $hit. Lance is the greatest TDF rider of all time period. He has NEVER tested positive for using performance enhancing drugs year after year after year the French were gunning for him including this year's tour when he was singled out and again tested negative and went on to blow the field away....in fact he could have made even a bigger mockery of all the guys this year in the race that he destroyed. The French and many others can't and never will come to terms what he accomplished and therefore believe it had to be due to drugs which has never been proven in spite of repeated attempts while he was dominating. Did anybody train harder? No. Is anybody a more genetically blessed cyclist?...Likely not. His combination equals dominance. Come out of retirement? Why? There will never be another tour rider that will accomplish what he did. Testing old samples by a biased laboratory only bears weight to morons who believe in their veracity. It was poetic justice that Lance beat everybody in France...not once...but seven times.

Think of the time spent getting into shape for the tour, I don't think it's worth it just to show up a newspaper that will just acuse you again...

AndrewP 08-25-05 01:49 PM

He won against all the rules and drug testing that were in place at the time. All the other riders had the same limitations on them and he won against them. There was nothing fake about the cancer.

It is a pity that so much publicity is given to an event that was designed for doping.

What George said!

It's been made clear that the tests will have no bearing what so ever on his career. You can't be banned for research testing done on 6 year old tests. In fact the only proof they are his are some numbers matching up.

He has never tested postive in any of the last 6 tour wins, or any other time in his life, except for the saddle sore cream test.

I think this stuff will go away.

Absolutely..testing for particular substances is time specific...was a level playing field for everybody.
It is only a pity for those that don't understand the sport.

Plenty of professional atheletes have been caught doping years after they started. Most dopers are ahead of the curve. Why is LA any different? Please provide a link substantiating that L'Equipe is "biased." And sorry, being French doesnt substantiate anything. :)

Doggus 08-25-05 02:05 PM

This is coming from the French...no one actually cares.

Exactly. I believe the article said that all or most of the samples tested positive but would say any names.

nitropowered 08-25-05 02:11 PM

Hmm... an anonymous test for EPO reveils that that Lance was positive. Where was the anonymity in that? That raises lots of flags for me. I think the tests were tainted or numbers were changed around. And, its not like anyone could do anything about it, the tests were done on B samples, they never tested for EPO back then, and the WADA didn't exist.
