Oi! Software gaming geeks, I got an idea...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oi! Software gaming geeks, I got an idea...

I was rummaging around the olde Ps2 and saw this:

http://www.cateye.com/en/products/vi...d=8&subCatId=0

Nice idea, but crappy execution.

Here it is: use the cateye steerer and a PS2/Xbox peripheral magnetic or fluid trainer with variable resistence built in to receive feed back control from a virtual ride. Riders get on their bikes/trainers, go on-line into virtual tours, races, or criteriums in winter. Hilly bits get the resistence turned up, descents less , you get the idea. The on-line controller senses cadence and gear to simulate speed for the TV graphics. Perfect for winter training. Kind of a digital version of what Champion was forced to do in the 'Triplettes of Belleville'.

If they can accurately model the Nurburgring down to the pebbles for car racing games, they can simulate the alp d'huez or run one hour TDF stages, and you can compete on-line and race guys worldwide, maybe do a training ride with Basso...

Yeah, and make the other riders in your game hooked up to real people. Then we'd have a virtual race with hundreds of people..

I remember a thread about a year ago that dealt with cycling video games. Search is your friend. I'm all for a trainer-to-TV hookup. Imagine resistance that mimics the climb up Alpe D'Huez.

It's been done; there is nothing new under the sun. Computrainers are bloody expensive.

A while ago there was a company called CycleFX that marketted two interface systems. One was for the Playstation and the other was for the PC. Both systems were pretty sophisticated. They incorporated an interface unit for a trainer's roller to sense wheel speed/acceleration and a front fork-mounted steering input unit. It also accepted HRM and cadence inputs. For those who didn't want to hook up their own bike, they also sold an stationary exercise bike. They also had professional-level training software too. The entire package wasn't all that expensive... around $400 for the basic setup and $600 for the more advanced version. CycleFX went bankrupt and was purchased by Peak Training Systems who I think eventually killed off the GameRider product line.

Oi. They're already out there. Maybe they haven't made it up to the 51st state yet, eh.
