two part question- shifter plastic break / front derailleur

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

two part question- shifter plastic break / front derailleur

Ok so since I'm new, I may as well ask a two part newbie question:

1. As I was biking I went to down shift on the front derailleur and the dang chain popped off, so I had to pull over and refit it. Why does this happen, and how can I prevent it from happening again?

2. Brilliantly as I was trying this I went to lay the bike down on the ground, and it went down a bit faster than I had anticipated... As such, it landed on the front right shifter and broke the little plastic thing that says Shimano 105 on it. Just the little cover, and it's barely noticeable... however... I notice it. How can I get this replaced? Is it cheap?
