skateboarders= problems

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

skateboarders= problems

I live in the bay area and whenever i ride up this one hill there are sometimes skateboarders. They always come close to hitting me while coming on my side of the road(over yellow line) they are going somewhat fast down hill and im about 10-12 mph up hill. The main point is im going slow they are fast, im going up hill they coming down hill, they come over the double yellow line and come within feet of hitting me, while swerving. Anyone have any advice for me??...its also illegal for skateboarders to be on the street.

Skateboarding is not a crime (ok maybe it is in certain places)but being inconsiderate should be. Try shouting, "Gimme some room guys, thanks".
Are these always the same skaters? It might be worth stopping to chat w/ them if they are.

They certainly are in the wrong, but antagonizing them isn't going to help your situation any. Can you find an alternate route and avoid them?

If not, it might pay in the long run to stop one time, compliment their boards and skills, find out who their favorite skateboarders are, and make a proper introduction. Then the next time you ride that way and see them, you can just holler out a greeting. Hopefully they'll recognize you and give you space.

You are riding to far to the left if they are coming over the double yellow line, and almost hit you. Going up a hill at 10 mph, you should be as far right as reasonably possible, to allow traffic from behind to pass you. If you're already over there, then there is not much you can do. If they are coming all the way over to that side, well, one day they will meet a car that's not so forgiving.

Hey D..with that signature it is very hard to take you seriously....and there are some responsible posts in this thread.

As far as the skaters go, perhaps stopping to inform them (politely) of safe riding and road etiquette would solve your problems. Not all kids are knuckleheads.

Just my $0.02

Aww, come on now. I'm not saying he's right. I just like that line. You're gonna have to take my word that I have read (and, unfortunately, particpated in) plenty of stupid threads on here already.

Cmon guys. Don't you get it? My signature is the greatest thing ever. And Tupac is awesome and you know it. But you missed the point it's supposed to be funny. I cracked up like crazy the first time I read that thug life quote.

Anyway, good to provide someone with a signature quote. Enjoy. I should get paid for this.

Doghair, you totally missed the point with my signature.
But maybe I'll change it just for you. That's how special you are! Yay!

BTW, Tupac isn't dead, that's how he makes records.

They're probably teenagers, or younger, just trying to have fun. I'd take the advice to introduce yourself and complement them on their skills, and give them some safety thoughts. I wouldn't be concerned over me getting hurt, but them getting run down by someone in a cage. Even if they are in the way, it's great that they are outside and not stuck in front of the tube or playing their x-box.

In the bay area it's not illegal to skateboard on the street (although it might be illegal to skateboard on the sidewalk if you apply cyclist/rollerblader laws). I'm sure they are not intentionally trying to run into you or scare you, but they may not realize that it's a lot easier for a skateboarder to ride straight line than it is a cyclist.

I really don't think complimenting them on their "skills" (since riding on the street doesn't take any) will win you any points, they'll probably just think you're patronizing them and laugh at you (the same way people yell "Hey lance!" at cyclists). You'll probably say more by catching eye contact with one of them and nodding in approval.

I know some of the posts are half heartedly joking but violence is never the answer. If they are in their late-teens/20somethings I do not suggest attacking , or provoking them (pebbles, shoundering etc). A lot of skateboarders have a lot of aggression that they let out through skateboarding but if you attack them i'm sure they would have no problem redirecting that aggression. It also doesn't help that they travel in packs. Also, a skateboard is a lot bigger and heavier than a tire pump and when swung like a club you do not want to be on the receiving end. Ignoring the legal side, you know the worst case scenario will happen, someone will fall and get hit in the head and killed by an oncoming car.

Much like the rest of us I think they are just trying to enjoy the road, and are probably not aware of the ones they may affect.

I've never had a problem with sk8boarders. I give them some room, they give me room. If there's a hill you know they skate, try another one.

My pet peeve is newbie rollerbladers, on the bike path, holding hands. "...On your left, left! ... On your left.... LEFT! .... R RIGHT BEHIND YOU! HEY, COULD YOU GUYS SQUEEZE OVER A FOOT SO I CAN GET BY?! THANKS!" /they glare at me like I've just broken up their love embrace.... sigh.
