The huffy experience...
 

As I was pulling into my garage yesterday I noticed a red road bike standing near the dumpster. As the optimist that I am, I grabbed it and pulled it into the garage and left it there as I left the house. I come back to see what it was and see if I can salvage or fix the bike.

After a close inspection I found it was a Huffy, The components on this bike were horrid. The handlebars were some wierd design and the whole bike looked like a mess. Well after pumping the tires full of air I decided to take it for a ride(bad idea). My car is parked in a way that blocks the bike from being moved so I have to take it above my head and over the car. I usually have no problem with my Univega but the Huffy weights a TON. I was looking for the attached boulders on the back but didn't find any :D .

I rode it for about 5 minutes till I turned around and went home. Parked it near the dumpster and forgot about it.

Do people compete with these bikes? I hear the name tossed around but I can't imagine that it is actually a good bike. I think it weighs more than my MTB.

Huffy's are junk.....PERIOD
Their only purpose is to fill up department stores and provide children with a cheap bike to roam around the block. The only person who would dare ride one in competion must be the stupidest and poorest person in the world..Do yourself a favor and take that bike to the junkyard and collect a couple bucks for it.

I'll be taking my son-in-law on a little mountain ride this weekend. He's got a horrendous no-name bike that may not survive the trip. Stepdaughter's bike is equally bad.

I have a book with a picture of Greg Lemond riding a huffy road bike. I am pretty sure it was a rebranded bike and was not made by huffy though. Huffy is the same as murray is the same as roadmaster is the same as Pacific. Unfortunately Schwinn, Mongoose, and GT seem to have been corrupted by the evil empire of big box stores as well.

I know in the case of mongoose, one part of the company was sold off to another company. The mongooses you see in department stores are not made by the same Mongoose company you see in your LBS.

I haven't seen a huffy in years. When you were talking about this bike, I just assumed you were talking about a bike from the 80's.

Close. Mongoose was bought by Pacific. Pacific brought Mongoose to the department stores with cheap bikes, but they also still manufacture some decent bikes that go to the bike shops. Pacific also bought Schwinn with their bankruptcy. While they introduced Schwinn to the department stores, they also manufacture some higher end bikes that go to the bike shops. Same deal with GT. They aren't the same bikes as the ones in the big box stores, but they are all owned by Pacific. It does make it difficult on the bike shops because people that pay attention see the same brand in the bike shop as in the department store, and think they are the same, so they won't touch them.

If I recall correctly, the great 7-11 team of the 80s rode Huffys: Phinney, Lemond, Roll, Heiden, among others. They were the forebears of the Motorola team which begat US Postal which begat Discovery.

But now, like Schwinn, they seem to be junk bikes.

Huffy has been around for ever. At one point they use to be like mongoose or red line or take your pick of high end raceing bmx of today. I have a huffy bmx frame here that would put the hurt on some modern bmx bikes. The frame is a sharp pointed oval tube deal no clue what huffy called it. I just call it a diamond oval for lack of a better term. Its all chromolly very light and very strong. Now like most mongoose bies youll see huffy is total crap. 100% reverse of my old frame new ones are heavy and very week. Back in the late 80s bikes were judged for quality by things like large bottom tubes etc. huffy made their bikes witha greatly oversized tube or so it seemed. Infact the tube was not large at all but a standard small diamiter tube with some sort of lead or plastic filler applied over the tube.

Oviously a educated buyer will know better than to think big tube automatically means strong bike. Cannondale love the over sized frame tube. If i recall their tubeing is very thin walled and the large diam makes up for the wall thickness and then some.

They were never really mighty. Back when the Huffy Co. actually made bikes in the US they were total POS department store crap. Or at least 99.9% of them were, the exception being the tiny handful of pro bikes that were made by the likes of Serotta to try to elevate their image. BTW, they also made crap lawnmowers.

My Lemond was totalled and I just picked up a 80s Shwinn 27" road bike :D :D How I miss my ride!!

eh, I've had my Huffy Sante Fe II beach cruiser since I was 10 so about 7 years. Its held up on many good rides. I did multiple 50 miler trips with others who had better quality bikes, others who actually had speeds :). But at the end of the trips, I was still in the front of the pack and held my own. But I guess its just cause I haven't used any other bike so I worked with what I had. I think its done me proud for so long, so I should me more than happy.

bumping a 3 year old post? really? about huffy of all things?

I always wondered what happened to Redline (mentioned earler). I used to have a nice Redline BMX (600A) that was indestructible, and they were one of the bigger names amoung the pro riders... but granted that was 25 years ago.
Anyway, I hear they make a pretty good cross bike, but I'm not really into that so I wouldn't know for sure. You'd figure that if you make a cross bike you might as well make a roadie, but then I guess a cross is more like a BMX than a road bike, they just kinda look the same.

I too was an old school Redline rider (still have several, actually). Redline is still a serious BMX bike. You'll see a good chunk of the field at the Olympics on them this year.
