I never knew I was being "Dropped" before

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I never knew I was being "Dropped" before

I have been riding on roads and trails for about five years now. I have a Diamondback wildwood hybrid for combination trail/ road riding and a Giant OCR 1 for just road riding. I am by no means the fastest rider and I am not into racing but I have a great time. After reading some of the posts here I have finally realized that I have been "dropped" many times without even knowing it. In the future I will be sure to become offended when this happens. After all, I do have my honor to defend.

Yep, you didn't know you were in a secret road race, did you?

You thought you were just out there enjoying your ride, doing your thing, minding your business.

Well, next time be more careful. And it wouldn't hurt to put up a bit more of a struggle, to give
them more satisfaction in dropping you in their secret race. Come on now, work with them will ya!!

I know I am always secretly ashamed when some tricked out roadie on a carbon fiber dream "drops" me and everthing that comes with me: my fenders, rack, two panniers, blinkie and don't-run-me-over green vest. All that training must be working for them!!

Everybody gets dropped sooner or later. It really doesn't matter unless you are on a 'non-drop ride'. Before you go out next time you should talk your group and suggest that you all stay together. If you are having trouble staying with the group let someone know. It's always best for the group to slow down a couple mph in a more difficult spot then to let them drop you and have them then wait 15 min for you. Plus pushing it through those little tough sections of the course with the group will make you a stronger rider as times passes.

Do you ever hear them mumble something about 400 watts as they pass you?

Perhaps you've already dropped others without realizing it? Did you ever see someone ahead of you and pick up the pace a bit without knowing why? Did you ever wonder why you felt a little smug when you started up a hill behind a stranger and finished in front of them? Did you ever want to chat to a "hottie" (sorry, that comes from another thread) but instead passed them without making eye contact and hoped you looked cool vanishing into their horizon? Did you ever hear the rhythmic slap of running shoes on pavement right behind you on a really steep climb, and stand up for extra torque so you wouldn't be embarrassed by being passed by someone on foot? If any of this applies to you, and you've always felt a little embarrassed or ashamed, or that there was something wrong with you, or perhaps thought you were the only one doing it, don't worry. Everybody does it. You are not alone. We've all been there.

Not true. Somebody has to be slower than everybody else. That person is me.

What has always seemed way more bad a$$ to me than dropping someone, is dropping back and pulling someone back up to the front, or even giving them a push up an extra hard hill.

I got dropped today well ok left way behind by a guy on a madone. Just felt totaly drained. I did do a the big long hil at the park in higher than normal gear for me on it. Probably why but i just i dont know felt realy off today. Normaly i can just fly up most of the one hill i do every time even in 52 11 stop for a secound take a few deep breaths and cruise along. But today i got to top of the hill and felt like i was going to fall over.

Well I passed a couple joggers on the path, does that count? Of course it was just before some guy on a Diamondback hybrid zipped past me.

I dropped this woman towing her Cockapoo in a Burley today. Boy did I feel good. That will teach her about bringing her dog on a bike ride.
