Roof rack on Land Rover Discovery
I've got a roof rack on my Discovery, but I don't have the bike mounts for it. Anyone put bikes on top of their Disco? I'm fairly tall, 5' 11", and the bike's light, but it looks a long way up. So far, I've been tossing my bike in the back, but I don't like how it gets knocked around. And I really don't want to spend the money on a hitch rack. Thoughts?

You know I have a Disco II, and I have a Jetta. I have aroof rack on the Jetta and when I put the bike up there, I run into things, (low lying tree branches etc.) having it a nother three feet up is not a good thing. I have a roof rack, but we use it for the stroller, excess bags, etc etc. I have a hitch rack (the original LR one) and I like it, but it clamps a little hard, and I often worry about the tubes. Right now I usually use the Jetta, soon when I drive the Disco full time, Im going to mount a foork bracket in the back so I can throw her in there.

I thought the main point of a SUV was to have room in the back to carry all your junk around. There are several bike racks for sale that fit in the back of an SUV and hold 2 or more bikes upright so they do not bump into each other.

Thanks. Yeah, leaning towards a homemade rack in the back -- meaning a 2x4 with a couple of
fork mounts, I think.
fork mounts, I think.

I'm convinced those SUV roof racks are not made to actually carry things, they're just there to make the vehicle look more 'macho' and to further mess up what aerodynamics there are and decrease the gas mileage.

I personally would put my bike on top and carry a 3-4 step ladder in the back, but you also might look at a rear rack that attachs to the spare tire. Thule makes this one, Thule Spare Me:

I have a Disco II aswell and their quite small in the back, even when you put the back seat down. My bike just barly fits without taking the front wheel off in the back. And the roof is pretty tall so i have been thinking of a hitch rack.

walked out in the driveway a few minutes ago and looked at our Disco.
i ain't lifting no bikes up there.
then i got to looking at the ladder on the back door... wonder if i could mount a fork-mount tray on that? you know, go vertical?
nah. i'll just stick with the racks on the XJ or tossing it in the Honda.
