Gah-Crank brothers cleats aren't road compatible??
 

I don't want to spend another 25 dollars on road compatible cleats! That is damn frustrating. I may just return them for a pair of Looks. When it said SPD compatible, I just assumed they would work with my road shoes. It appears the screws are the wrong size.

Are your road shoes new? Are the screws the wrong size or the wrong pattern. Funny story, a buddy brought me his new road shoes complaining that he couldn't attach the cleats because the screws were to big. I took a look at his brand new specialized road shoes to find out that the threads in the bottom of the shoe had plastic doughnuts inserted in them to protect the threads before cleats were put on. I just pried them out with a screwdriver. It really looked like they were just smaller screw holes. Any chance this is your problem?

It may be, I haven't looked at them that closely. That may very well be the case, in which case thanks much! I only got to glance at them before I had to run to class.

I am going to sell some NIB Egg Beater C's (with mtb cleats) and some road shoe cleats and go up to Quattro Sl's instead that come with the road cleats only. If you bought pedals too this may interest you. Didn't really mean for this to be an ad, but might help you.

I had this problem with my new Egg Beaters and Pearl-Iszumi road shoes. Thought the holes were smaller than the cleat bolts. Actually, they had small lugs screwed in, I assume, to protect the threads. I just needed a small (tiny) allen wrench to remove them and the cleat bolts could go in.

Eggbeater C, SL & Ti, and Candy C, Sl and Ti come with SPD-shoe compatible cleats.

The Mallet mountain bike pedal comes with SPD-shoe compatible cleats

The quattro pedal ships with a 3-bolt SPD-SL compatible cleat. I have also heard the Quattro cleat is made of a harder brass than the mountain cleats, and will wear more slowly from clipping/unclipping.

I love my Candy SL, the platform mates really well with the tread on my shoes.

The only difference between the Crank road cleats and MTB cleats is that the road cleats have the rubber pontoons to protect the cleats from damage when you walk around. The pontoons are not necessary with MTB shoes where the lugs will protect the cleats. The screws should be exactly the same.

It's possible the original poster owns SPD-SL type road shoes and
just discovered you can't mount crank bros. cleats to them without the adapter:
