What sized cassette do you use?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think it's 11-24 7 cog cassette on my trusty Lemond Reno '98. I'd be happier ditching the 11 and having a 27 or so for steep mofos. Then again I'd be happier with a 10 cog setup too.

12-25 with 50-34 compact. When I first got this bike, I couldn't climb worth a crap. I rushed back to the LBS thinking I needed a triple. They said wait until my components wore out before making the switch. Later I was able to climb the local stuff so I thought I might just get the 12-27 cassette. I'm climbing Monte Sano 34-25 at the steepest but for most of it I'm 34-19 with a good cadence. I usually do two trips up Monte Sano in my short afternoon ride. I've shifted into the 50 ring to see what it felt like and I think maybe next year I will be going up this thing several gears higher.

On the high gear side, I first thought there's no reason for me to have the 12 or even 13; not even down the mt. do I max them out. Now I mash 50-12 all the way down the mt. with no brakes until I get chicken ~40mph.

I'm looking forward to doing over 60 miles this Sunday, the longest ride of my short career. I'm no Lance Armstrong or Tom Boonen but I'm making forward progress.

In another 2500 miles when it's time to replace the cassette, I may go with the 12-27. A lot of the countryside where I ride has mile + climbs and I'm likely to hit them 20, 30, 40 miles into a ride. 34-27 would be a ~8% improvement but that should keep me fresh to go longer.

I have a Lemond Tourmalet, it came with a SRAm 950 12-26, I replaced it with a SRAM 12-23 and new chain yesterday and rode 28 miles yeterday afternoon. My initial response is the 12-26 may have been a little better for me because it seems like my average speed was a little higher but I will check that out in the coming days. I am running a Triple with 52-42-30.

We'll see how I hold up with that combination in a couple of weeks, when I do the JDRF fundraiser ride in Asheville...

12-27 Dura-Ace. I've worn out the 21 cog in about 9 months. That's my main climbing gear.

I've learned about this place:

www.cycle-dynamics.com/

They sell individual titanium cogs. I'll have to put my order in.

This is a great thread. Keep up the work sincity. Hehe

The biggest problem with this poll though is all those replies with 11-23 don't take into account compact doubles.
