Road Tires?!
hey,
i was wondering if anyone had any awesome road tire suggestions? standard 700cx23 clinchers...i've only used the standard run of the mill michelin pro race's and bontrager race lite's, but was wondering if anyone had any favorites for normal use (no need for super-light/grippy/long-lasting stuff) just a great all around tire. thanks, -bob |
You are gonna get a million responses.....
-what's the best saddle? -what's the best pedals? -what's a good frame material? -who makes good shorts? and like threads bang on for pages and pages but get nowhere. :D |
Conti Ultra 2000s can be a great deal online...
|
Specialized All Conditions Pro is a winner and a decent value. Grippy, very durable. Took three months of constant skipping/skidding on my fixed gear to wear one down to the casing. Very noticeably more durable than the Conti Ultra 2000s I used to run.

what are you saying...just buy some damn tires and get on with it?? then why does this website exist?
|
Just hop over to the tires section of RoadBikeReview.com
According to them...Michelin Carbons... |
Michel Carbons :D

Michelin Carbon
I did a little research and went with the Michelin Carbon. I could not find anyone who would say a bad thing about them. Seemed to be just what I was looking for. Fair weight, good rolling resistance, excellent puncture resistance and long wear. I have to add that I had the rear tire had a blow out less than one month later. When I wrote Michelin to let them know I was unhappy that a tire blew after only a few weeks of riding. They said to return the tire and "We will replace the tire if it exhibits a workmanship or material problem or as a courtesy if inspection confirms low usage.". I returned it Friday. You have to admire and support a company that stands behind its product. |
I like Vredestein Fortezza's. There great alround performers that a very resilient and aren't as expensive as Michelins or Continentals.

dime a dozen ... and everyone has an opinion.
I rode Michelin Axial Pro's for 4,000 miles ... no punctures, no flats, etc. Just replaced them with Michelin Pro Race ... and they are holding up well. |
Specialize Mundo S or Pro, I prefer the smooth tread. The tire is light at 220grms and has flak jacket protection against flats, and is way sturdier, more flat resistent and longer lasting then anything Conti has, and the LBS I got them from like them better then the Mich Axial Pro.

Vittoria makes a great tire.
|
Unless you're racing head on over to performance or nashbar and pick up a cheap tire. Then you'll know specifically what you want in a more expensive tire, or that if you even need one.

Vittoria Rubino Pro Slick - I have had these tires on my bike since I built it or roughly 1800 miles. I started out around 230 and am not 215 and I wear tires out pretty fast (did a Kenda Koncept in 500 miles through to the cord) and while the rear is pretty square the threads aren't through yet and I have yet to get a flat.
As a replacement I have a set of Verdestein Fortezzas waiting but I am thinking I should have gotten another set of Rubinos. |
Another vote for Vittoria Rubinos. 3600 KM not a problem. Very nice ride to them.

Vredstein Fortezza SE, price/performance winner, IMO.
