$100 for 20 grams
 

Just ordered a Ritchey WCS alloy seatpost after getting myself all psyched about the WCS carbon. That was until I found out how much the roughly 20 grams you save with the carbon post cost. More than $100 difference. For 20 grams. My bike's steel, not like it would change the ride much.

Guess I just haven't shopped for carbon parts much. I'll pay for a great wheelset. I'll pay for a great frame. I'll fork over a bit more cash for a good riding carbon fork. But this just took me by surprise.

I'll confess my stupidity. I replaced a D/A seatpost with an FSA carbon seat post. I was putting a whole new group on the frame, and got caught up in the moment (hey what's another $150 when you're throwing down $2000). Turns out when you actually weigh the 2 seat posts (not manufacturer's spec's) the FSA is 5 grams lighter. I can't tell any difference in ride quality, and the final insult is that the FSA has too much set back for me, and I can't get the seat where I had it (and liked) with the D/A post.
The real sad part is that either I'm too much of a poser (the new seat post looks nice) or too unwilling to admit I threw away $150, to put the D/A post back.

Oh, and by the way, I've got my eye on some Zero gravity brakes....

I'm not one to avoid spending money on my roadie, as long as I'm going to get something for doing so. The other bikes I'll spend less intentionally. But the roadie gets spoiled. I just couldn't justify it. It would look all kinds of cool, but it wouldn't do a damned thing more than the alloy version will do.

OTOH, and in what may be one of my stronger statements concerning hypocracy, I do dig on the Zero G brakes. Maybe if and when I build up a weight weenie bike I'll do carbon everything and Zero G's. Hell, you can't take the money with you, right?

The standard weight weenie rule-of-thumb is pay $1 to save 1 gram. Non-weight-weenies won't even pay that much.
