Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rollers / Indoor Training

Last week I rode on my rollers after work (fell off too, but that's a different story). It was kinda fun because I could see just how much my riding had improved over the last 8 months.

Rode on the rollers again last night. With bloom being off the rose as to performance improvements, there was nothing but the monotony of pedaling without going anywhere. I can't believe I rode these things all last winter.

I don't think I can make it to Spring.

I've been wrestling with the same problem. I'm in the market for a stationary machine to ride during the winter. I'm into cycling for my health and for fun. I love riding my bike but after about 40 miles or so that seat starts to get uncomfortable.

I don't need to train for a race or anything so I see no need for rollers. I can see I mat not ride the trainer as much as I should so I think I am going to opt for a regular stationary bike. Maybe a recumbent.

Spinnaker - I wouldn't recommend stationary bikes. I don't think they feel much like real bikes at all. There are trainers that don't cost that much if you already have a bike.

Rollers are OK but never seamed to get much of a workout from them, however they are more engaging than a trainer. Having said that, I prefer the trainer for a good workout. Break open the mp3 player and blast some Everclear

I ordered "The Heart Rate Monitor Workbook for Indoor Cyclists" by Sally Edwards last week and it finally showed up yesterday. I've been flipping through it this morning and it has a ton of indoor workouts that all revolve around heartrate monitoring but I think it is going to be pretty useful to keep the rides interesting actually. They seem pretty detailed in their structure so I think it will break up the monotony pretty well... i hope.

I'm not really concerned how close they feel to real bikes. That is kind of my point.

Do you folks wear proper bike shorts w/ padding when on the trainer? I haven't been finding it too necessary, as the lack of road vibration and bumps makes the trainer even comfortable w/ -- well, w/ boxers. Yes, I hit the trainer with boxers, and just boxers (and socks and shoes of course).

I also find I sweat A LOT when on the trainer, to the point where I have a huge puddle of sweat under my bike by the end of a 30 or 45 minute "ride." Does anybody here use one of those sweat-catchers while on the trainer?

Eww. Too much information! Just kidding, sweetie. Seriously, a fan makes it much more pleasant, and, um, a little less damp.

i still wear my shorts, the main reason tho, i find my upper thighs rub on the saddle, so normal shorts cause sore spots for me.

i cant be arse to pay for something to catch the sweat instead i use a normal towel dress along the top tube. comes in handy to wipe the sweat from your face to.

I wear what the kids today would call a "doo rag." (What ever happened to "bandana"?)

There are also reports that indoor training in the presence of moving air (i.e., a fan) is better for you in addition to being way more comfortable.

Please tell me the "doo rag" is on your head and not around your waist instead of bike shorts.
And I thought that the dude wearing boxers "and only boxers" on the trainer was too much info!

LOL for a bunch of leg-shaving ninnies you guys are sure sensitive.

The towel + dew rag tips are appreciated. The fan is something I just thought of today, and yes, it helped.

Btw, I added a T-shirt today -- not very comfortable, but it caught a lot of sweat heheh. I think I may switch to my regular bike shorts and synthetic T-shirt, if for nothing else than that nice sweat-wicking action.

You can get a pilates or yoga mat from any Target, K Mart, or Walmart. Slip it under your bike and it'll do.

Go to the gym...
I was never distracted on a spinner... because they're were "friends" around me to talk to

Tour De Franz DVD's... But I agree with most... the indoor thing is pretty monotonous.. and lonely... geez... I'm going out for a ride...

LOL
