Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have to say I have been very happy with this one from performance. The ascent mega force...currently $24.99. Sure there are nicer ones I am sure...but it works just fine, and has a gauge at the top which I prefer.

I have Wrench Force. It is an excellent pump. I also got mine at performance and never had problems with it. I also got a Blackburne (spelling?). The pump wasn't working within a couple of months. Avoid getting that one. It's lightweight.

I have had no trouble with a $25 Beto floor pump... Never used the schrader valve, but the presta seals on very tightly.

If your pump still works try the Topeak hose upgrade kit with the smarthead, I think Performance has them and the head is indeed "smart".

I bought a Silca about a year ago. It works okay . . . the main thing is that it works, though, and has easily replaceable parts. I had a couple of others that exhausted after a little over a year. I only buy Michelin tubes now because they have smooth valves which make getting the head on and off much easier.

+1 on the Wrench Force floor pump. Pumps up to high PSI's with very little effort.

Specialized makes the very best one I ever had or used. I got the mid range one priced at $35. Better than the Park shop I had as well. I've gone through two Joe Blows and two Performance, so I wouldn't recommend either.

I don't recall the price or brand but I went with a lightweight plastic one. I do not, repeat, do not recommend the plastic model. Feels like it's going to snap in two once you get up past 100 psi.

I recently splurged on the upper level Specialized--its a good buy and I like that it stands up on its own. Still have an old Pista as backup.

Back when I was racing collegiate, Mavic provided neutral support and their guy, Mitch I think was his name, had this custom-made all-aluminium large-diameter floor-pump. It operated on both the pull and push and would pump up a completely flat wheel to over 100psi with just 5 pumps... I want one...

I concur about the virtues of a Silca pump. Its fabricated of Columbus steel tubing and designed to last. I bought one in 1982 and have replaced several leather washers and it still works fine. The newer pumps have more plastic bits and I feel they are less durable.

Silca pumps are like Italian steel frames -they are both very traditional and if taken care of properly can last a long time.
