Tights - Over or under?

Over. Always.
I don't want a layer of lycra between my bum and the chamois.
To be honest, I've never seen anyone wear tights UNDER shorts.
Leg warmers under shorts is a different story, though.

substructure....
Here's my entire order, based on what I wore today:
We start naked, applying Assos chamois cream to, well, you know....
--Leg Warmers
--Arm Warmers
(If you want a good laugh, look in the mirror at this point)
--Base layer shirt
--Bibs, tucking base layer into bibs
--Jersey
--Wind tights, tucking jersey into wind tights
--Riding jacket
--Balaclava
--Booties over shoes

ive always worn my tights under my shorts because i didnt like the look of them over. well i took a 70 mile ride yesterday & after about 60 miles the sewn seam on my tights was rubbing against my unmentionables and it was very uncomfortable. now nothing is going to go between me & my chamois. i learned my lesson.

I go up to the "Jersey" step and just go riding.

Rad - thanks for the laugh. I've had a hell of a day at work and just picked a thread to scan before heading home. That was great.

Yeah I know it's a lot of crap and it is bulky Rad, but I HATE the cold.
That's what I wore today and it was 50 outside when I left.

It makes me think of my old Rocky Horror Picture Show days.
Think, Frankenfurter. (for those that "know".)

There are your cold weather tights (thick, maybe lined) and your cool weather tights (much thinner).
I've had no problem wearing cool weather tights under some nice bib shorts. I've ridden them that way for years and have had no chafing problems up through 2 1/2 hours.
At 6'5" with a 36" inseam, leg warmers don't work for me.

I also tuck my jersey in over my shorts but under my tights. Helps keep it in place, and also keeps extra wind out. Although in cold weather, I now forgo the jersey, and wear a long sleeve lycra base layer (black) instead of a jersey, then wear my cycling jacket over. The base layer is much nicer without the jersey pockets.

Base layer under shorts, preferably nice long base layer that covers the kidney area comfortably. Tights over shorts. Jersey over tights. Jacket over the full works.
If it's a notch colder, then sleeveless baselayer under shorts, and long-sleeved base layer goes between shorts and tights, neatly tucked in for warmth. Then jersey (optional) and jacket, as above.
What I haven't worked out is where to tuck things when it's so damn cold that I want two layers on my legs. Leg warmers under the shorts and tights over all that, I guess.

Tights over bibs/shorts always.
For 50F you really only need leg warmers or tights on bottom and base+(Jersey+arm warmers) or (mid weight riding jacket). I like to be a little cool when I start out. If I start out to warm I will need to start stripping layers.

For my regular commute, since I commute year round and put my clothes through a lot, I wear my tights (which are usually thinner and more frail) under my shorts. But for longer weekend rides, I wear my tights over to protect my boys.
