Bicycle-Motorcycle Connection
 

I have noticed quite a few post on the Bike Forums where people say they also have motorcycles, does this make up a large part of the group or is it just a few of us? What do you guys think the connection between the sports is, love of speed or just two wheels you dont have to peddle?

For the dual bikers what bikes do you have? Bicycle/motorcycle

What skills have you been able to use learned from the bicycle to the motorcycle or vice a versa?



I own a 1995 Ducati 900 SS SP I guess this explains why I still love steel road bike frames.

I know heaps of riders, that do both. I find most road cyclists that ride moto wear full protection. Coming off in lycra at 30kmph teaches you what >60kmph would do without full-leathers.

I have had a number of Ducks...900SS/SP's and Cr's. GSXR-1100 & 750, FZR's, ZX-9, VFR-700&750's, Rz-350's, YZ-250, Can-Am 125, Ktm-400exc, Cannondale 400....bet I am forgetting a couple. Right now I am motorcycle less but that will be a temporary issue.

I've been riding motorcycles for many years as has my wife. Currently we have 13 motorcycles in the garage so I won't list them all. Current favorites are my Aprilia Futura, Ducati 907ie & my Moto Morini 3.5 Sport but that changes from season to season.

I've had a Ninja600, Honda VF500F, VFR750R, NC30, Yamaha RZ350, R1. I think my next bike's gonna be a Ducati of some short. Training on both have yielded great cross-training benefits. Racing the motorcycles on tracks have definitely given me much better handling-skills in crits; I could make up ground on the inside all the time just by cornering faster and cutting a tighter curve. I can drag a pedal all the way around a corner without digging it in. Racing crits and learning to tame the twitchiness and abrupt sliding behavior of bicycles certainly helped my motorcycle racing as the approaching limit feels like it's going in slow-motion.

actually she "Dye" that very same day after the engine over heat do to all the mud and the heads valves and cilinders got warp, 72,000 miiles of pure destruction and at least 100 drops and no less than 10 serius crashes....rest in peace..


I also Skate, Skateboard and landjuge for a long long time, so I ride Mtbs and my bikes in the dirt and roll on my skates on pavement,, road bikes kind of bore me a little..

currentlly i'm fabricating (trying to) a rack so i can take my Ibis tandem on the motorcylce, but so far is proving to be a little to much.

the tandem is almost as long as my GS.

Been riding m/c's for 44 yrs and bicycles from the beginning of my memory. Currently I own two Harley's. Had them both since '95 and put well over 110,000 miles on them to date.

I enjoy being 'outside' and love the wind (a tailwind on the bicycle) and fresh air and freedom one feels from not being caged in. (I've also owned a sailboat and done some ocean sailboat racing over the years).

In addition to the Harleys and the Trek I own two convertibles, an '04 Corvette and a '93 Allante.

Here are two of my open air vehicles pictured below. If you look carefully just to the left of the Corvette you can barely make out one of the Harleys.

OK I just have to say as a not motorcyclist those nubers sound slow

30kph~ 20mph
60kph~ 38mph

I have gone down (crashed) on the bicycle at around 30mph~47-50kph.
Almost daily hit over 40mph >60kph and have even gone down hills with lycra at 50+ MPH. I see the weight of the bike you are on as a big factor in the preceved danger of a crash.

The amount of skin that can be lost decking it at 20mph. Plenty of motorcycle riders round here in summer in shorts & tees, decking anything above 40mph is gonna cause alot more road rash than 20. Make sense?

Wanye Gardner started riding crits after retireing form 500's, he went down once and claims he had never lost so much skin in all his lfe.

EDIT: 40mph on your motorbike after a good ride through some twisties can feel like your going to topple over from no balance.

Just sold my Ducati 853 and bought a 2000 R6 to race next year.

In any case, I have had a slew of Ducati's.

These are my original 900SS/SP, My current 996, My YZF 750 SP,

additionally I have had a 750 F1, a 996SPS, CBR600F3, YZF R1, VFR 750 F (still have it too) 5 different GSXR's and a TL 1000S.

F2, cbr 900, Gsxr 1000, Gsxr busa, currently bikeless :(

But not for long big kawa zx12r in my future :D

Love both motorcycles and bicycles, but motorcycles will always be my true passion. I have been riding both since I was a child, however due to financial circumstances I have not been able to do much motorcycling lately. I currently have a Kawasaki KLR 650 for the street, Honda RS 250 and Yamaha YSR 50 for the track. In the past I have owned Ducati 750ss, Kawasaki EX500, Honda CR 250, Aprilia rs 250, and a bunch of dirt bikes and 4 wheelers when I was a kid. Since I have not had money to go racing my motorcycle I have been riding my bicycle more and have been getting in much better shape, which should help me in my motorcycling when the time comes. Who knows maybe I will start racing my bicycle also.

Ducati Monster S4R, KTM 450 EXC and 20 or so dirt and street bikes in the past.

I have an '82 Suzuki GS650L i keep in my hometown so i can get around more easily. It's not worth it to keep a car up there, and not worth it to bring a bicycle on the greyhound for the weekends. I store it in a friend's garage and this weekend i'm taking her (the motorcycle, not my friend) out to see if the leaves have started changing color in upstate NY/northern PA. Yeee Ha!

Living in NYC there's no reason for me to have a motorized vehicle of any sort, not to mention the fact i'd be paying at least $125/mo. for parking and my insurance would go up 600%. In three months i'd have paid out more in insurance and parking than i paid for the bike.

You've gotta have both... although since taking up road cycling I can't seem to find much time to ride my 2000 Yamaha R6.

Wow I had no idea there were so many motorcyclist here on BF. My dirty little secret is that I only got back into bicycling to get in better shape for motorcycling(fit back into my leathers). I recently sold my Honda RC51 and was looking for another bike but now that bike might be a Cervelo :D . Or I should say I will buy a new road bike before I get my next motorcycle. I really am enjoying riding the bicycle getting back in shape with out the fear of speeding tickets :rolleyes: .


Taking the bicycle on the back of the motorcycle, what a great idea, I cant believe I never thought of it. That way on Saturdays I dont have to make a decision: bicycle or motorcycle. How is it to ride with the bicycle on the back? Did you make the brackets yourself or buy them somewhere?




Hey Mellowdave your old Ducati 900SS looks just like mine. I was going to sell it a few bikes ago but just could not bring myself to do it. It still rides great, and there is not a much better feeling than keeping up or passing someone on a new sportbike down a twisty road with my 78hp antique. How did you like yours?

I got into cycling as part of my training for roadracing my Honda 600RR. I like cycling so much I think I am going to get into racing this also next year. My wife just shakes her head and says "anything with two wheels and you're a happy man" :D

I have an 86 Suzuki VS700 Intruder as well as the bikes.

I put more than 10 times as many miles on my bicycles than I did my motorcycle this year. :eek: :rolleyes: :( :o
