should I buy a new wheel?
I have a LeMond Etape and have for a long time now. But ever since I bought my bike trainer I have not ridin it on the trainer because it wears my tire down too much. So I was thinking should I just buy a new wheel and heavy duty tire and then put that on when I want to ride the trainer then switch back for road use? And if I do could I get a single rear chainring? The wheels I have now are 32h alloy and tires are Bontrager Select 700x25c.

it wears down the tires too much? I dont know...
I've ridden my bike on the trainer a dozen times and I see no apparent wear on the tire...
The wheel is going to cost you like 5 brand new tires

You could buy one of these tires and mount it to an older crappier spare rim:

That's what I'm gonna do... I just bought a set of Mavic Ksyrium Elites... I'm gonna trickle my wheels on my Allez Elite onto my wifes Allez and use her rear wheel as the universal Trainer wheel.

Just by a old junker of a bike at the thrift store for like 20 bucks pull the old steel rim off it toss in a quick release axle and have fun.
Id look for a 27 inch set up this way you can buy cheap tires at kmart or where ever if you ware out the ones you get with the bike.
One of my old panaracer 27 inch tires lasted me a full season of about 6000 miles or more on the road. I only paid like 10 bucks for the tire. If you get lucky and get one of them youll never ware it out on a trainer.

Oh hmm thats intresting considering a quick release is nothing more than a axle and skewer. Ive had dozens of bikes with non quick release rims over the years that i converted over to quick release. Takes all of 2 or 3 minutes to do if you have the parts handy. You might need to pull the free wheel off if the old cones are tight and need to get a wrench on the free wheel side cone. If they are not stuck you can just use a flat bladed screw drive to hold the cone steady.
Now you might run in to problems on a old bike that isnt useing standard threads on the axle. In such a case you will need to pull the free wheel and change both cones.
I had to use a standard axle when i snapped a quick release skewer on a ride once. Seen a old back wheel laying in some ones trash and pulled the axle.Swapped it out on the road side and went home to replace the skewer.
And if you ment old bike for 20 i can buy them all day here for 20 to 25 bucks. Some are worth keeping some old schwinn le tours concords etc.

I think he meant finding a $20 bike at a thrift store with a serviceable wheel.
Our local thrift stores must have an idiot pricing their merchandise..or know they have an uninformed clientel.
Every "adult" bike in the store is at least $75. That is, $50 Walmart "MTB" bikes along with totally rusted out 70's-80's beaters...
