I decided to build up a NOS circa 2001 frame with silver shimano 9 speed 105. The unusual part about about building this bike is that 9s parts are available but a lot harder to get than I thought they'd be.
Sure you can always find them on ebay, but the days of sourcing them from Performance at really low prices has almost ended. Nashbar is probably your best bet, but even then selection is becoming limited.
I forsee the 10 speed and 9 speed prices eventually converging. Volume places will discount 10s to the same price the little guy sells the 9s for.

why do you need 1 more gear? Useless...
If I remember correctly, almost everything has to change to convert to a 10 speed drivetrain, at least this is what one LBS told me
G'luck, I'll stick with my 9 for now ;D

Personally, for one extra gear, I wouldn't waste all the money...
Thanks for the clarification!

there are all sorts of ways to justify the extra gear - but when it comes down to it on the street i have not noticed any benefit from having a 10spd vs. a 9spd. i still climb the same hills and ride the same flats at the same pace i always did.

hello
Hmmm.....that's funny, I'm still building stuff with 7 & 8 speeds, and sometimes with only one single cog. The only thing I sometimes feel obsolete come from my PC purchases.....

Shimano has really put it to the home builder with their new pricing policy. First group to jack up the prices was Dura Ace 10, followed by Ultegra 10. Old 9 speed parts for these groups stayed low for a while but have now increased way beyond where they used to be. Now it's 105's turn.
Big rip in my opinion.

It might be possible on a double. Like I said, even though I was in granny gear, I wasn't close to getting exhausted...The sensation of falling over overtook me

Well, next September, stores will begin to get the first bikes with the Shimano 12 cog system. Ya gotta be fast to stay up with the marketing guru's at Shimano. And, you don't really think Shimano is gonna stop with "only" 12 cogs do you?
As long as there are morons with more money than sense, our friends at Shimano will be willing to "innovate" and "improve" their products.

53-11,
You need to start a build thread, so you can show us the progress.
9s is not "Obsolete", meaning it's technology is no longer any good, compared to 10s. It's just that the newer 10s 105 is coming out soon, and so Shimano just isn't manufacturing anymore 105 components in large quantity. This is normal, as the technology slowly progresses.
I for one, feel that for most rec riding bikes, the 9s systems of Shimano and Campagnolo are both more than enough for the average person. Matter of fact, I have been considering building my next bike with a Mirage 9s group, just for kicks. It's very cost effective compared to 10s as well.

My 8-sp lasted over 10 years. I expect my 9-sp stuff to last at least as long.
Shimano is chasing me away in a hurry with all this planned obsolescence though.

I think 10 speed's biggest advantage is on wide-range hill climbing/touring cassettes. The only thing different between a 9s 12-25 and 10s 12-25 cassette is the 16t cog. Going from 15 to 17 on my bike doesn't feel like a big jump in gearing to me.
10s for the Galibier pass:
Ultegra CS-6600: 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,24,27

I got everything except finding a silver 36 hole 105 front hub was kind of tough because I didn't want to pay $40 for it (for example I got my black 36 hole front and rear 105 hubset from performanece for $56 total with coupon back when they sold them)
I ordered the silver 105 brake calipers yesterday (I was thinking of Tectro RX-40s, but they are black and I've put together a complete silver group)
Anyway this is a basic bike and I just felt better about putting matching low dollar stuff on it so I avoided some of the new stuff.
