Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

that sucks. i was looking for holes in your schedule where you might pop in a ride or something, but couldn't really come up with anything. when i'm stressed for time like this, i try to get some jogging in. a 20 mintue jog feels like about an hour ride to me.

Get some lights and go out at night when your kids are asleep. Dress warmly.

Don't get me wrong, I sympathise...but when does Mrs. Substructure ride or otherwise do her thing?
On these days when the light is short I sometimes bring my bike to work and ride for 45-50 minutes during lunch. It's not nearly enough, but it's something.

Why not? If Mr.Substructure's kids are old enough to cheerlead, that's a high school, or beyond activity. They're definitely old enough to take care of themselves sufficiently, and it would only be for a couple hours at most.

Now a days kids at much younger ages do such things, my daughter went to cheerleading practices a age 7. It all depends on the age of the kids.

If I rode at night I'd be wide awake for hours afterwards, but that's me.

I just started a new job this week, so no riding. And I'm so tired from working (alternating early morning and later evening shifts until they figure out what my permenant hours will be) that I don't know if I will ride tomorrow or not. I had plans for some longer rides, but they may fall through. I totally symapthize. When I'm not working, I'm watching kids (nephews ages 8 and 10) and between them and the work, it doesn't give me a lot of "me" time unfortunately. Luckily, they just hired three more part timers too, so once they get worked into the schedule, I'll see more free time and a consistent work schedule, and I can get back to riding regularly.

Man, that 45 minute commute sucks. Think of all the time you'd have if you could either get rid of that or at the very least, not have to drive it. I'm not sure where you live, but I know for many people a 45-minute commute by car is not very much longer on a bike. An hour, an hour and a half, that's a good bike ride if you do it twice a day, and unless you are on a strict shift schedule, you should be able to work 8:30 - 4:30 and work through lunch instead of 8 - 5 , right?

Tis true. My 40 minute drive translates into a one hour, 20 mile bike ride. Goes a very long way toward keeping the base miles up.

I feel for you Substructure. I can't tell you how many rides I've missed for family events. But one thing I've learned is this - if it's truly important, we find the time. Good luck.

Do you all normally split the tasks or what? Because if you both work, the more I think about it, the more I feel sorry for her. Shoot, even if she doesn't have a job and works from home, I feel sorry for her.

Got ya beat - 2 weeks, zero miles. Anticipate 3-4 more weeks, zero miles. Hotel stationary bicycle is unridable. At least I won't have to worry about recovery.

Solution: Leave kids at Nana's for a night. Bet she'd be thrilled to have them.

Hey, I feel for ya. What about riding on a lunch break? surely they let you take a break at noon or so.

you could go work at your LBS if yours is anything like my local shop, the guys there seem to ride all the time!

good luck.

Last 4 weeks=0 miles

Sunday Oct. 2--loaded up vans to go to north central mexico--no room for the bikes
Sat. Oct. 31----still drooling over the hills and roads (and dirt for my MTB) here, but without my bikes
Only one more week left.
