Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Kiwi Wheel Builder???

Hi All,

Ive been lurking for a long while, as all of the questions I've had in the first year have either been covered in other posts or on websites I found through posts in the forum! However, I have found a question that i havent yet been able to find an answer for, and will unlikely be answerable for many of you. But on the off chance...

Ive decided to upgrade my wheels from the rather crap stock Shimano wheels that came with my EMC2 Equippe 6 (frames designed by NZ'er Eric McKenzie, check them out at www.emc2bikes.com, no affiliation but I like my bike!!). Ive been tossing up between Mavic Ksyrium Elites or American Classic 420's for a wee while, but I have also noted the praise for hand built wheels eg Mike Garcia.

As a New Zealander, getting wheels hand built in the States is likely to be prohibitively expensive, so I was wondering if there was anyone in NZ that built high quality wheels to a customers spec's?? I had thought of getting my lbs to do it, but i thought i'd enquire as to what else was out there.

Thanks in advance!

I have had wheels rebuilt by Andrew at Hot Cycles in Auckland, and also at Pennies in Tauranga. I can fully recommend Andrew at Hot Cycles, but I am not sure if the mechanic that rebuilt my wheel at Pennies after a crash is still there.

People seem to rave about wheels built up using Mavic Open Pro rims and DT competition spokes. Hub choices are many and varied, with sealed and cone bearing options aplenty. After spending many frustrating hours trying to get cone tension right when doing bearings I can say for certain my next wheel set will have sealed bearings.

www.hotcycles.co.nz for contact details.

There's a guy in Rotorua that built up my rear wheel after I got cleaned up by a car... Can't remember his name but will post it when I recall!

Welcome to the forums, what part of NZ are you in?
