How to get to Unicoi Gap

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How to get to Unicoi Gap

I live in Atlanta, GA and as posted earlier I am riding Unicoi Gap tomorrow. I just wanted to make sure that I was riding the correct mountain When I get into Helen and pass all those Alpine looking buildings, do I have to take any turns to get to the mountain or is it on the same road that eventually starts to incline and turn? Or do I have to take a turn somewhere past those Alpine looking buildings? Also, where do I park and what is at the summit of the ride? Thanks again everyone..

Sorry, I got there on bike, with 3 other Gaps on the way so I can't help you much. But, I can tell you that there's really nothing much at all at the top.

I have to ask - why did you choose this gap? Some of the others are more interesting (Wolfpen), or like Neels, has a good stop up at the top.

Have fun - bundle up - it's gonna be brisk on the descent!

Well, I guess that it is the only one that I sorta have an idea to get to but not exactly sure. Plus this is the first real climb I will be doing so I am a little intimidated to say the least. hummmm, maybe I will look into Wolfpen if you think it is a nicer ride.

Wolfpen is MUCH tougher than Unicoi. Do Unicoi, report back, then do research on Wolfpen. Right now, though, it still has some of the fan's paintings on the road from the Tour De Georgia. Kinda inspiring to be rolling over some of that!
To be honest with you, I didn't pay much attention to Unicoi - my focus was on Hogpen, which was up next. Unicoi might be gorgeous and fascinating - I just don't recall! We went over it towards Unicoi Park - if you start at the park, you'll be going up the side we descended. Let me see if I can post a map of 6-Gap, so you can see where Unicoi is, and if you can add in another gap or two. Also, I want a full trip report when you get back - was your gearing okay, etc.

edit: hey, when you're done, use this map, or any map, and drive over some of the other gaps. I did 6-gap sight-unseen, which made it pretty scary, because I had no idea what was in store around the next bend. Drive around up there - see what you can see, and then next time, you'll have an idea of what's in store! Good luck, and have fun!
