Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1st Road Bike

I'm looking to get my first real road bike. 05 Felt F80 for $699 is a strong candidate for consideration. Do you think the F80 is worth the price or should I consider other alternatives?

699 for a F80 is a pretty good deal, if it's coming with the nine speed 105 shifters, rear derailleur, front derailleur, and cassette. I believe its MSRP was $950 in early 2005. 699 is normally a price point for bikes with more Tiagra components (one step down from 105).

That sounds like a good deal for a bike that's 105-equipped. I think you'll enjoy that as your first roadie.

That's a good deal but don't let it stop you from test riding every bike out there. Test ride stuff way out of your price range so you can appreciate how good a deal your Felt will be.

My wallet said Trek but my body said Orbea and TDF fever said "Do it now!"

Yes I've test ride a few bikes, 05 Trek 1200, 05 Felt F80, 06 Felt F75, and a 05 Giant (don't recall the model since it was in the beginning of my search). Overall I like the Felt a lot. The only issue with the 05 model is there's limited size. The salesman at the LBS suggested that my size is a 52 base on my height and a 52 feels fine. The 05 F80 for $699 only comes in a 50 or a 54. I test ride the 50 and it feels fine as well but the LBS only allow me to ride in the parking lot so I'm not sure how it feels on longer ride. I used the formula that I found on the Internet which is inseam * 2/3 and that equate to 49.xxx for me. Should I listen to the salesman or should I follow the formula?

Sounds like a good one. Bought my wife a Giant OCR 2, and she LOVES it, but I paid nearly $100 more.

Maxxer, prices in Canada match US prices exactly, just a dollar difference.
Buying US means importing to Canada, where you will get charged duties. Don't compare LBS with eBay, there is a cottage industry of scam artists on eBAy, expecially cross-border to Canada, where parts get mysteriously swapped out.

But if you're telling me that pricez are barely the same and the dolar difference is the only difference, how comes I see people talking about full shimano 105 bikes with carbon forks like supergo's scattante for 700 USD when here you can't get one under 1500 CAD?

1) because there's a 13% tax applied by the CCRA to import whole bikes

2) most bike shops and distributors in canada are still calculating pricing based on an exchange rate of 1.40 to 1.52 (from 2.5 to 3 years ago!) rather than the recent range of 1.15 to 1.185

example, my bike, when I bought it, would have cost $1700 canadian + 14% GST and PST. I bought it in the states and the total after WA state sales tax came to $1450 canadian.

So basicaly, I'm right.

Bikes here are more expansive because of the tax on import and wrong calculation or the dollar rate which is reduced if you buy it from the states.
