Is it just me, but are Vredestein Fortezza SEs hard as hell to mount?

Is it just me, but are Vredestein Fortezza SEs hard as hell to mount?

It's a folding tire, but I'm having a hard time getting the lips to stay underneath the clincher lips. Anybody know any tricks to mounting these?

Well, I thought I had gotten it, but one blew off my rear tire in the middle of a ride, and the bead tore out of the casing. I was really liking them...for the 60 miles until that happened. Maybe the bead wasn't all the way on? Not sure, but be careful! They were at 135 when this happened, within the wheel and the tire specs. Be wary!

I find every new tire is a ***** to mount for the first time. I always hope flats stay away for couple hundred miles until the tires are more pliable. Don't have experience with those tires though.

I have the fortezza's too and I think I know what you mean. They're actually easy to mount, maybe too easy which has it's own difficulties.

Start by sliding one bead on in the middle of the rim all around. This shouldn't be that hard. Now inflate the tube just enough so it holds it's shape but not too much. Fit the tube all around inside the tire and then position the tube all around so that it's sitting centred inside the rim. Then with two hands draw the other bead into place and use both thumbs to simultaneously draw away from the middle, pushing the bead into place. I may do over half the circumference this way before turning it around and pushing the rest on. Yes you do need a much larger section of bead over the rim before it will hold itself in place with a folding bead tire than with a wire bead tire. With my fortezza's I can usually put a tire on completely by hand while with wire beaded tires I always have to use levers.

So yes I think I understand the difficulty you describe although wire beaded tires require more force to mount.

Mine were hard as hell to get on the rim too, and off when I sent my wheels in to have the freehub replaced. As PedalMasher said though just about any new tire is a mofo until it stretches a bit.

I didn't have any issues getting them to hold the rim once I got them on.

Wow...I mount Fortezza's with my fingers.

Do you guys partially inflate the tube before putting the tire on the rim? Just enough to round out the tire, not too much. I put about 10 pounds in, then if it's too much, let a little out. But I've never had a problem with a new tire...

it's not necessarily an issue with tires but rims to. Some rims are more difficlut than others and some are virtually impossible to mount ANY tire on. Fortezzas I've dealt with have been a cinch on several rims.

Actually I think these SEs might be more of a pain than the regular Fortezzas due to the beefed up construction rated for higher psi (160)?

I didn't have too much of a problem mounting the SE's, that is until I got a flat that ruined the rear tire after 50 or so miles on it.
