Cycling has finally arrived

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling has finally arrived

Never thought I'd see the day when cycling was at the front of the public's consciousness. Yes, LA has put it on the map, but this really seals it for me:

I heard a soundbite from Detroit Piston Rip Hamilton last night talking about how everyone is excited about their 7-0 start. He was trying to remind people that it's a long season. And he said....

"We have a long way to go. It's a marathon. It's the Tour de France!"

For those of us who have been with this sport since the hills formed, that is a milestone.

i remember when i was a little kid and hearing the tour de france mentioned by adults a few times in casual conversation. they always seemed to talk about the different jersey's and nobody really knew what each one meant. at that time, i thought it was just one long race - nobody explained stages to me. i honestly thought that you could win the race by staying up all night and riding when other people slept.

Funny you should mention that. I started a new position recently, and while at a meeting last week asked a co-worker where he got a green shirt with our companie's logo on it. He said that our boss (who lived in France for 3 years and actually attended a few stages) awarded these to the group that finished last in a spring sales contest, and explained how in the TdF they awarded the green jersey to the last place finisher as a sign of shame. At least he gave the first place team yellow. I'm hoping he doesn't do this again, because against my better career instincts, I will most likely correct him, which I'm sure won't go over too well after years of handing out green jerseys.
