Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A Nishiki. About $400. Do they still make those? It was a great bike at the time.

2004 Bianchi Brava, 650$

I think its a 1999 that was never ridden though, and was fixed up. Its a good bike. Good starter.

Schwinn Traveler - initial investment $5.

-- till I replaced virtually everything on it. All said, still probably < $250

Spent lots. My sister said she was shocked since she always thought of me as being really stingy.

After a Schwinn, it was a Raleigh Super Course/w Campag Record. Bought from a musty old-style pro shop, and had the gruppo upgraded. The SC frame was nothing special (3rd rung, I believe) but was made with Reynolds 531, or at least the front triangle was.

A flat black 1987 Schwinn Circuit. It was built for crits and had Suntour Sprint components and Cinelli bar/stem with Benotto tape. I think it coast me around $750 or so. A year I wound up buying a white 1988 Cannondale Criterium Series for $400 and swapping out the components from the Schwinn. Both bikes were pretty neat...

Motobecane Super Mirage, about $200 in the mid-70s. It was stolen in 1979. I replaced it with a Motobecane Grand Touring for $285.

1981 Motobecane Grand Touring - $380

My friends thought I had lost my mind.

I still have the bike. No idea where those friends are now.

A Huffy 18spd. This was in the early 80s and I have no idea what it cost. Probably not much judging by how long it lasted.

My next bike was a gorgeous 1970s Motobecane Le Champion with Campy Nouvo Record, sewups and a nice Brooks saddle. I borrowed $500 from my Mom to buy it used and paid her back every penny. I loved that bike and was heartbroken when it was stolen from my garage shortly after moving to Los Angeles. The frame was painted a champagne color with a gold accent around the lugs. The bike fit me perfectly and I loved riding it.

1984 or so Raleigh Rampar then I moved up to a 1978 Trek 530. That Trek was an awesome touring bike. Wish I had it back.

1986 Centurion Ironman (Dave Scott) - Red, 54 cm. Tange tubes. First year with the Shimano 600 SIS gear. Dia Compe brakes, Wolber rims. I think it was about $650.

Sweet ride. I still ride it once in awhile in the winter.

The farthest back I can remember is my $180 1979 Schwinn LeTour IV and the only reason I remember that one is because I still own it. In fact it is here in the living room with me as I type, not more than 4 feet away
