Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thoughts on Easton/Velomax wheels

Ok so im looking for a new pair of wheels I currently have ksyrium elites and would like to get a wheelset to use for racing and then use my elites to train on. I can get a deal from veltec on easton wheels and wondering if anyone had any experience with them and what they take on the wheels are
here are my options:
Tempest II Clinchers $471
Ascent II Clinchers $443
Circuit Clinchers $249

or a set of ksyrium SSC SL3 for $450ish

I am 165 lbs and race on the collegiate level
any of your thoughts and/or opinions would be appreciated

one other thing is that I am looking for the wheels to be durable since there are LOTS of crashes in college races

I run a set of Velomax Circuits on my KHS Flite 2000 and they're great wheels. I'm over 200 lbs and other than a slight tweak to the rear wheel after about 500 miles, I haven't touched them. Relatively light, very strong and zero flex.

I have the older version Tempest II's, the ones' that weigh in at 1722g, I believe. The newer ones are closer to 1500g. I'd guess I have close to 15,000 miles on them and they're still like new. They have never come out of true unless you count the time my 5 yr old threw a football into the spokes. Or the time I demolished the rear rim when I hit a cement water drain - no wheel would have survived that one. Aside from a couple freak accidents the wheels have been great. My only complaint with Velomax/Easton wheels is their spoke/hub design. If you ever break a spoke you almost have to send your wheel to them to get it fixed properly. In short, I hightly recommend Velomax/Easton wheels. BTW, I weigh in at 165lbs and have ridden the wheels on all sorts of crappy roads and raced on them as well. Also, they are very stiff - no flex.

Those are some awesome prices on those wheels. How are you able to get them so cheap?

Hi, I had a comment on the easton's on another thread, so I just went and copied it for you, short answer best wheels I've ever owned( I have never had a hand built custom set made so I don't know about them).............

hey, I must be missing something here. I purchased a set of Ascents back in 2000, put them on my bike and rode the **** out of them for the last 5 years, rode across usa and have put them through every pothole and bump that I have been able to, and I have put one hellava lot of miles on these wheels......I talked to the guy that invented them in 2000 and because of his help and answers to my questions I bought the set....I am about 180 and he said that if I were heavier he would recommend going with the Orions.....

so at any rate RIDE the damn things, the design was to be made bulletproof and for a light set of wheels I can testify that they will take anything you can throw at it....also besides once a year general maintenance and after all the crap I have put these through, they are still true....

BTW it is funny you began this thread, Halloween sundayI went into Supergo and lo and behold they had a set of Easton
Ascent 2's that I had been eyeing for the last several months for $525....but they had a Halloween sale for 525 plus another 10% off....I had $20 in Performance coupons and asked if they would take those too and they said yes.....yada yada yada was supposed to get back by 6pm to put a deposit down and couldn't......yesterday I went in and talked to the Supergo guy, said I was pissed I missed the sale and he said they would go ahead and still honor the sale price!!!yay!!!...got a new set of Ascents 2's for 525-10%-$20.00 Performance coupon and they ALSO put my sale on my Performance 10% back member for another 10% in coupons.....man I am a happy dude...now I have 2 sets, the new one for my new road build next year and my still usable set for my build up winter bike....happy happy happy...

when I die I have made arrangements to be buried with both sets

so just go out and enjoy them, they are really underated and really nice, bulletproof liteweight wheels......doco

I have a pair of Circuits AND Accent II's. I raced on the Accent II's last season and they are truely an awesome wheelset. Extremely light, for a clincher wheelset, for climbing purposes and great for all around racing/riding. Plus you are 20 pounds under the weight limit so you will have no problems with that.

Oh and also the Accents and Circuits are one of the most durable wheelsets I've used.

It sounds like the ascents are probaby what i will go with, they seem to be a great deal for the money, and sound as if they are extemely durable. I get this deal cause i am a shop employee (one of the perks), lots of companies let you order product from them at a discount from the wholesale price if you work in a shop.
