If you adjust the stop on your rear derailleur, you should have no trouble due to spoke guard removal. I did shift to low gear too aggressively once on a rear wheel without a spoke guard. The chain got caught momentarily between the lowest cog and the spokes. The spokes got gnarled up a bit, but the wheel still worked.

Even with proper adjustment, stuff can still happen...I've also seen plenty of spokes that were more than just a bit gnarled.

I can't wait for the day a pro throws his chain into the spokes. CF dork disks will be the new must have item for any serious biker.

okay so it sounds like, if I want to play it safe I should leave it on. The bike I just sold had a pretty harmless one.

My new bike has, albeit crystal clear, a bigger uglier disk. I don't know if it's something that you can purchase separately but maybe I can have the LBS change it out for the better looking version.

Yeah, my girlfriend's bike came without a dork disk and first thing she did was throw the chain off and chew up all the spokes on the right side (she kept trying to pedal with the chain off). It was partially my fault cuz I didnt adjust the RD properly but she really didnt have to keep pedalling LOL.

I had a plastic Sachs rear mech snap in half and the chain wrapped around the spokes. I managed to unravel the chain back at the workshop (it wasnt field repairable) and had to replace a couple of chewed spokes.
No more plastic mechs for me.

Just make sure your rear derailer stops are adjusted and you can lose the disk.

Wow, that's unusual.
Seems it would have broken because you're chain was using it though. Are you saying you're not going to use one at all? How recent was this?

The dork disk is only need when assembling/setting up mass produced bikes. Once your RD is set the disk can be history. As a old Mechanic, I would say they have value on kids bikes that get dropped on the RD side. Or for any dork that rides and doesn’t know what they are doing. Believe it or not some people will bring their bike in for air in the tires…..those darn skinny valves…don’t you know.

I'm in favor of disk-ectomy because the plastic dork disk will probably crack and keep your freehub from freewheeling, causing you to lose the chain any time you stop pedalling. Just adjust the derailleur and you'll be fine. However, if you have a chromed dork disk, you're already too cool for school and you should probably leave it on... it matches your stem shifters and suicide levers...



Gnarled-up spokes are providing crack initiation sites for future spoke fatigue.

The short answer to your question is: "Clearly, yes."

When I had my own shop I used to love some of the people who took them off. After they shifted into the spokes I would get to sell them 8 new spokes, a wheel true job, AND a new spoke protector disc. They'd usually want me to adjust their rear derailleur too.

In the interest of full disclosure, I don't have spoke protector discs on any of my bikes but my wife still has them on hers. I'm surprised at how often this subject seems to come up and how strongly some people seem to feel about it.

They're easily obtainable. If you want to order one you need to know how many spokes your wheel has and how many teeth are on your biggest cassette cog.

But everything on a bike needs to be tuned up as it slowly gets out of proper adjustment. Doesn't that mean dork discers have one less worry (or less tuning up) than those without. Or have you guys been going forever without needing to readjust your derailers for this?

While cables stretch resulting in the need to adjust, Limit screws rarely if ever need adjusting (other than perhaps changing wheels or cassettes) And if the derailleur is out of adjustment, its going to make enough noise to let you know it needs a tweak before it goes into the spokes.

The protectors are OEM because the majority of people who buy bikes have no idea what a limit screw is, or that it is possible to put the derailleur into the spokes. (That's why I left it on my teenager daughter's Trek).
