Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need Advice: Trainers

Hello... I've decided already that this winter is gonna suck just as bad as last winter up here in New England. It's time for a trainer. I'm looking at the ~$300-400 range. I've really been keen on the Elite trainers. Anyone have any experience with them or have one they think is the best? I was also looking at the Tacx Flow. I'm concerned about the noise with it though.

My biggest two requirements are that it's hella quiet and that it's not too overwhelming move around after use.

Thanks everyone!

Fluid 2. Retail is $299 but can be had for cheaper. It is extremely quiet. So much so that when mine started making a little noise after the first 3 rides I took it back. The LBS replaced it without a second word or glance. The new one doesn't make a sound. Very good feel and the resistance is controlled via the gears and not some add-on. It has a very large power band (up to 700+ watts) - more then most will ever really use, has a great warranty, and doesn't get anywhere near as hot as my old Blackburn used to. I've seen but never tried the Elite brand - they look good. See if you can get a spin on a Fluid (made by Cycleops - www.cycleops.com) - they are very popular and a lot of bike shops have them. The unit has two extending legs that then fold back into the frame - low profile when folded up and not very heavy.

I second the Fluid2. I bought one about a month ago from Performance and absolutely love it. Its a great workout, quiet, easily adjustable, and folds up for easy storage on a shelf in the garage. No complaints here.

I have the Nashbar watt master, fluid trainer. It's less than $300 dollars, quiet and has a computer with handle bar mount resistance adjust. I think it's great.

For quiet, go magnetic, not fluid.
I've got a rim-drive remote resistence adjustable Minoura Magnetic for sale : it's much quieter than my Kinetic or a fluid 2 I tried for a week. I tend to prefer my Kinetic, but it is louder than the Minoura and it wears my tires.

I also recommend the Fluid2. I love mine. It's stable as a rock, can handle up to 700 watts, has a good "road feel", let's you ride out of the saddle and is very quiet (at least mine is). BTW fluid trainers are supposed to be quieter than magnetic trainers. Cyclops also makes one called the 9401 with a full computer readout unit attached.

What model number do you have for the Nashbar trainer?

Looks like the price is up a little. It's "on sale" for more than I paid for it 6 weeks ago.
