Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I finally received my last of 7 TDF DVD, Lance's first win in 1999 and it was very entertaining , especially the early sprint stages where Cipo won 4 (?) stages in a row ( he later abandoned in the mountains, of course -big wuss pretty boy ).

The one feature on the DVD that I found fascinating and sort of inspirational was Australian sprinter Jay Sweet misfortunes. It was his first tour and climbing was murderous for him, yet he stuck it out after a couple of crashes and even being dropped by the friggin' autobus! The officials felt so sorry for Jay that allowed to ride again (maybe because he had become a huge fan favorite?) even when he finished out of the time limit the 1st time .

Here's his tour diary if not familar with this guy. He took it real well- great temperment. Never to be heard from again in the grand tours.

there was a thread about him a little while ago

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ighlight=sweet

I suspect that might've been him posting as 'cheese', since he's not posted since

Doesn't anybody besides me find this a fascinating story?

The thing is Sweet would have dusted the best rider at BFs even though he was mediocre by grand tour standards!

Wait 'til Monday and ask Ed073.

And he knew FAR too much. "Jay has always thought of himself as a porn star"....yeah, that is most definately him.

I emailed Cheeze and asked him point blank if he indeed was Jay Sweet. He said no but he is related to him!

Jay Sweet was a very capable bike rider. Most Aussies who have seen him race would agree that he never fullfilled his potential.
