Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pick your favorite available Cannondale frame and hang your modern stuff on it. That's what makes these classics so much fun.

Nicely done! I don't have speedplays, but I believe there are tension settings that make them easier to clip in and out of, perhaps someone with them can chime in. Maybe you have the tension a smidge too high and its causing an issue when you go to clip in. Good to hear the following days went better. Sounds like your club will be trying to keep up with you.

Keep practicing. It will become 2nd nature in no time. In the meantime, get proactive about unclipping BEFORE you get to stops or traffic, and keep your knees shaved and clean. The bruises and scrapes will soon fade, and you'll just enjoy the feeling of being one with the bike.

Hey, it's great to hear I impacted a life positively.

As others said, clipping in and out will soon become second nature. I have started clipping into my Speedplays without looking recently and it is relieving to not have to take your eyes of the road or traffic to get clipped in. Speedplays are crazy difficult to clip into when they are new. I was really turned off by it, and wondered if Speedplays were for me. They have since broken in and feel much better. As someone else mentioned, be proactive with unclipping when coming to a stop. It is one of the two things the shop owner who sold me my bike stressed both during the purchase, and the sizing a few days later (the other thing was to shave my legs - that was the first and last thing he told me during my sizing). I still unclip early for some occasions, and am only just starting to unclip once I get to the line.

P.S. Excellent choice with the Giro Empire shoes. Those are classy. My feet are more on the wider side of things, so Giros don't fit my feet at all. When I was shopping for shoes, my friend, who isn't usually well rehearsed in what products are available or what is good or not, mentioned those shoes.

So do you shave the legs or not then? Lol.

Ahh, the question in cycling. Here's my simplified answer:

Summer: Yes. I get to ride at least once a week, sometimes as many as 2-4 times! So, yes.

Fall/Winter/Spring: No. I'm in running competition season off and on for these 9 months, so riding is limited. Several of these months you can't even see my legs save for running the indoor track workouts.

Haha, I was just joking.

Personally, I refuse. However, I haven't had any bad road rash yet either. It could all change one day.

I figured you were, but I wasn't sure how to play it off.

My excuses include, but are not limited to: I'm a young gun who wants that Euro Pro look*, and to help heal any road rash. When people ask me, "why do you shave your legs?" I simply respond, "I cycle".

I'm a little to worried about what a group of men clad in lycra think about me. I've noticed my runs in the summer are less comfortable with shaved legs, but pulling on bib shorts is way more comfortable with shaved legs (even with the grippers flipped when pulling them on). Plus, I'm a very hair fellow. The one competition I can remember winning since elementary school is "hairiest legs".

*and vanity plays the leading roll

No one has ever asked me. If they did, I think it'd have to do more with them looking at my legs than my preferences in grooming.

FWIW, waxing is better than shaving.

Love your Evo! And with top-end Mavics as well

How much does it weigh with the RSys and CCU? I bet they're already way under 6.8 kg (15 lbs)...

Did you just replace the stock Supersix dust cap with the Evo conical spacer? Or is there any other modification/ parts needed?

Just replaced the conical spacer with the Evo Conical spacer, but it was 5mm shorter so I had to re-cut the steering tube.

Did you try the Domane, Defy, Roubaix? I certainly can't afford a ride that nice. Both my bikes are last year's clearance models.

My LBS doesn't carry Giants. I test rode the Domane 5.2, the Tarmac and the Synapse Carbon 5 (105). The Tarmac was too aggressive to me. The Domane was about equally comfortable but a bit more expensive than the Synapse Carbon 3. One thing I liked about the Carbon 3 was the granny gear on the rear (32T) in addition to the 11-28 gears. I believe the extra cog is helpful for the hilly rides I do in Seattle.

Thanx!

It's a custom build freshly completed. The old Cannondale criteriums (SR's and Black Lightning) lend themselves well to modern parts. This one began with a crit frame with aluminum fork. I sanded it to bare metal and finish coated with black metallic gold. Then came the BB/Chainset, racing wheels and the little parts. Feels like a new bike instead of something out of the Reagan era.
