Move your shifters "up" the handlebars...then rotate your handlebars down/forward. This will eliminate that irritating bump/transition from bars to shifter hoods, and make the drops flatter so that they're more usable geometrically, and you will be able to relax your grip in them.

Reagrding Cannondale - I loved my system six but the clearcoat at the carbon - aluminum junction stress cracked and peeled. They warrantied the frame which made it a no brainer to rebuild the same brand.....I am building a Dean Titanium bike with the leftover parts from my system six - should be fun and certainly a good USA built bike in the end

EDIT: when I look at the two pictures it looks like the reach is actually longer in the updated setup, but I swear it's much easier!
And no need to bash the picture, it was one of the first pictures I ever took of the bike and wasn't aware of BF rules . I also found out real quick that white tape didn't go with my bike, don't know why I got it!

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
Makes a lot of sense, I never realized the angle of the bars until you mentioned it. I was previously having problems reaching the brake levers (even though my hands aren't small at all) when in the drops which is why I brought them a bit lower. I'm now able to use the levers much more effectively in the drops now, but as you mentioned...the annoying transition is present. Any suggestions on having the best of both worlds, or is it always a reach to use the levers in the drops? Here's what my setup was before the change...

That being said, there are variations on "in the drops", too. There's the flatter section towards the ends of the tube, and there's the upward-angled part further forward. For me, I use the flatter part when I'm just rolling along and trying to duck out of the wind, while only expecting to use one gear and not need the brakes anytime soon. I'll reach deeper forward, into the angled part, with more of a bend in my elbows when I want to use the levers in the drops (mainly for shifting, occasionally for braking).
I usually see two general shifter positions around BF and on pros' bikes -- either a straight continuation of the tops of the bars like Banzai recommended, or move the levers up a bit, which can make the bar tops angle downwards a tad while the shifters create a flat-to-upward transition.
Feel free to experiment some more, but do it without bar tape..

My baby...2010 CAAD9-4. Originally a red bike, but wrecked with only 63 miles on the odo! Finally got it repaired after waiting 3 months for a replacement frame. I guess CAAD's are back ordered for months now. Glad to have it back!

15.04, but i have a whole bunch of seatpost that I can cut off it. Thanks for the good words. Bike rides like a dream.
And to gus, you can order the CAAD9 as a frameset. Go to your friendly Cannondale dealer and just ask.

I finally have a semi-non-crap pic to add to this thread courtesy of Bike-to-Work Day! Quick cellphone pic outside the workplace. My apologies: no garage ergo no white garage door shot... but notice I did get the driveside.
My 2009 CAAD9... It'll be our nine month anniversary at the end of May. And no, I'm not gonna flip it unless somebody wants to gift me a real nice 80-90mm stem -- I think I'd be too stretched out flipping the one on there now. I could also use a zero setback Thomson Masterpiece seatpost as well, but I'll settle for the Elite if you wanna give me one in black.

A brand new CAAD9 frameset is MSRP'd at $850. They are available in white and matte black. Beware, they are backordered for months...mine took 3 months to arrive, though some of that was likely due to the somewhat crappy LBS I was using at the time.
