Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who here owns a full Dura-Ace 7800 group?

How long can I expect the cassette, chain, and chainrings to last?

Also, when I should I get the STI's overhauled?

Thanks to all those who answer the question.

I have everything but the crank (FSA K force mega exo) I've got about 4000 miles. Time to replace the chain. The cassettes are fine ( although only about 2500 on the one I ride the most) Based upon previous D/A groups. I think you can expect 10,000 or better on the cassettes ( particularly if you clean and lube the chain regularly and rpelace it often. (more often than 4000 miles, i'm overdue) I've never overhauled the brifters on my 9 speed group ( after 7 years of use.) I'm not expecting to have to overhaul these.

Let's see...

Just had a new rear wheel built and put a new casssette on...the old wheel has a three year old casette that was checked and is fine and has about 28,000 miles on it...but it's been totally cleaned and disassembled every six months.

Shifters were new with that cassette and have never been "serviced" other than opened up to replace the cables and moved twice to new bikes...

Regarding the rest...I scrub and clean the chain once a month which will extend the life of the rest of the drivetrain...I find that I replace the chain about every five thousand miles due to stretch.

I don't see the end of the life of what I've got for a long time...

FWIW..I got 40,000 miles out of a set of 105's I had on another bike. They still shifted, but had so much play in them I replaced them with Ultegra 9 speeds...

You should be replacing the chain every 1500-2000 miles. Get a Park Chain Stretch checker and always change at 0.75% stretch. Thats about all I get on a chain. I use an Ultegra 10 chain but they are exactly the same minus more nickel plating (and a few $$$ more). Its probably because the chains are thinner than the 9speeds.

It really depends on your riding style and how you shift. If you are a masher, big, powerful, and particulary shift under a lot of stress like while climbing hard, you'll get much less wear. I would say changing the chain every 1500-2000 miles as nitopowered advocates. On the other hand, if you're a lightweight person that spins alot and doesn't use a lot of foce on the pedels, you might get 6,000 - 8,000s. If you switch chains before the wear gets bad, you can go a long way with cassetts. BTW, I've never worn out a chainring and I'm bad with chain maintenance.

I got about 3500 on my first DA10 chain with a DA 11-23 cassette during the middle of my first racing season. I have not worn a chainring either although I can not say I ride enough right now to do so.

8k on a chain? Really?

A woman came into a LBS recently while I was there browsing. She had 8,000 miles and no problems with shifting. She was small and light, and did most of her riding on a flat trail. So it's possible.

Yeah, I ride hard, sprint hard. No wonder I went through 2 chains in 3800 miles. I expect to get a new chain before my Collegiate season starts at the end of Feb. I wish I could buy chains in bulk, like a huge reel.

Your answers depend on how you ride and how you take care of your drive train. I seem to get about 2,000 miles out of a DA 10spd chain. I have over 6,000 miles on the rest of the group with no signs of problems. If you replace your chain when it needs it, your chain rings and cassette will last a long time. As far as shifters go, I've never had a problem. My left shifter got a little stiff on me, I sprayed some WD40 in there and haven't had an issue since. I try and give my drive train a good cleaning every 200 miles or once a week. If you ride in wet weather, I'd suggest getting the grime off after every ride. Take care of your stuff, and it will take care of yu

Cleaning and replacing the chain regularly will help the cassette last longer.

My bike has all DA 10 including wheels. I change the chain between 1500 and 2000 miles, I figure it's a small expense to keep the shifting precise and not having to replace the rings and cassette as often. I also keep the drive train clean and lubed, I don't really ride in the rain either unless I'm caught out in it.

Oh, I forgot to post how I ride.

Very high cadence, over 110 RPM, max 125 RPM on climbs.

I weigh 141 lbs right now, down to about 137 in the spring and around 135 by summer.

So I would imagine I would get at least 2000 mi. out of the chain, and 5000 mi. out of the cassette.

Cool, thanks guys.

You should be able to get at least 10,000 miles out your cassette.

125RPM on climbs? I'm presuming you are refering to the up, not down, portion of the hill. Most people, even good spinners see their cadence drop on climbs, not rise. Have you actually measured this 125rpm with a computer?

Yeah, it's a 2005 Sigma Sport BC1600 witha cadence sensor.

It was set up by my LBS when I got the Hardrock overhauled during the summer.

The Colnago arrive on Thursday, and I don't have a camera, but I'll get one this weekend.

I saw your picture of the Ruby in the "Red Bike" thread. Very nice, how do you like it? It's about time they started offering higher end women's bikes. It's a good thing my wife only likes riding our tandem, or I'd be out of pocket for one of those

125 in what gear? your 22/28? ROTFLMAO

anyway, I would suspect you should get at least 5k out of your cassette. 1500-2000 miles from your chain. although you may want to use a heavy lube so when you are climbing at that RPM you don't fling all the lube off!

cheers-
