LH 105 8 speed gear/brake lever broken

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

LH 105 8 speed gear/brake lever broken

My LH (front mech) 8 speed gear/brake lever is no longer working. It wont down shift. It's nothing to do with dirty cables. It wont shift down even without cables attached.

shimano dont have any 8 speed, triple chain set 105 brake/gear levers for sale.
Ebay havent got any for sale.

My local bike shop have suggested a new set of eight speed sora levers (a pair - they wont supply only one) at one hundered pounds (owch).

They have also suggested a 105 equivalent (not sure what this is yet - have asked them) at one hundered and fifty pounds a pair. (double owch).

what do people think?
Any other suggestions??

your shop probably doesn't know the shimano ST-R500 still exists:

https://bike.shimano.com/catalog/cycl...=1134259393704

It's a 8-speed shifter/brake lever set that is the same as the old 8-speed RSX (what turned into Tiagra, if I remember right)

I see a right hand lever for sale at $97 US dollars..

100 pounds is way too much to pay for Sora.

I would suggest a partial dis-assembly and cleaning in kerosine as the installation instructions for my Shimano DuraAce 8 suggests. I had to clean my LH DA-8 shifter last week when they got sticky after 10 years, relubed them with 4 drops of synthetic oil and it now works fine.

You see a problem, I see opportunity.

Shifters, cassette and a new chain will 9-speed your bike. If it was my bike (and it's not) I'd be checking ebay for some lightly used 9-speed stuff from somebody who just has to have 10=speed.
