Rookie Rider
Okay here's my deal...
This past August I committed to a three-day 200 mile Tour that would take place in early October that benefitted a charity. I was by no means a rider but I believed in the cause and wanted to do do something to help.
I borrowed a bike and started training pretty much by trial and error. I had relatives that rode and they came out with me and answered my questions and really, really helped me by pushing me and encouraging me.
My first ride was August 24th. It was 20 miles included a few hills and afterwards I was exhausted. Surprised that I was able to do 20 the first time out, but spent nonetheless.
Anyway, each weekend thereafter I got on the bike both days. A few different times I cut out of work early to ride during the week knowing I needed to put the miles on if I had any hope of completing the fast approaching tour.
Long story short - The Tour was this past weekend and it was awesome! 75 miles on Friday, 70 on Saturday and 65 on Sunday. It was the hardest friggin' thing I've ever done but that fact that I completed it gave me such a sense of personal accomplishment.
The tour included 8, 9 and 10 percent grades of lengths from half a mile to three miles long and lots of them!
I went and did a search for biking forums and found this one because I can't stop talking about it and no one I know wants to hear about it anymore!!!
Thanks for your attention. I have fallen in love with your sport and there is no stopping me now.
I guess I have to return that bike and buy my own now, huh?

My buddy just did his first triathlon this weekend. I let him borrow my bike, and now he wants to buy it off me.

Soupcan,
Wow! That is quite an accomplishment on one or two months of riding! I just did my first MS150 this weekend, 75 miles each day. When you have never ridden that far it really is an awesome thing when your realize you have done it. Way to go.

Very well done Soupcan!
I remember when i achieved my first ever road cycle century in June, my computer just ticked up the 100miles as i travelled the main Street of home, i was so elated I let out a great whoop of joy and punched the air with joy, people in the street turned and stared probably thinking i was nuts, but i did not care "i was so happy"

Soupcan,
That's how we sucker in new victims. Better cancel all your credit cards and give someone you trust control of your bank account. You will be wanting a new bike, then cycling clothes, then some accessories, then clipless pedals and shoes, then you will decide it's time to upgrade the bike, then you will need a second bike as a spare. O, what a tangled web we weave! (cue maniacal laughter)

Rainman I hear ya!
My wife is already starting to add up all the purchases I've made at the local bike shop.
I find myself wandering in there not cause I need anything but just to see if there is anything I could buy.
I'm tellin' ya, I'm hooked.
Is that the Caesar Romero Joker or the Jack Nicholson one? It's too small for me to tell but I'm going with Romero.
willic - I can totally relate. Prior to the tour I did the longest I rode was 45 miles. Once I hit 46 on the tour I was just pleased as punch with myself.

Dang, RainmanP. Your warning comes a little late. I just started about 3 months ago and I'm already looking new stuff for my bike from reading about all the cool stuff people have or want on this forum.
And yes, I want a new bike too, even though I love my Specialized S-Works M4.

whoa dude, 200 miles is a lot for a first time event. i just began road biking this past summer too, i love the sport, ive ended up quiting track on my high school team(which i loved also) so i could bike all the time
