Anyone use this dampening bar tape system?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone use this dampening bar tape system?

Thinking of trying this out from REI but don't want to waste $30.

I've got a teammate who uses it. He swears by it. Are you having problems or just looking to spend a little $?

No, no problems but I don't want to develop any either. Currently using gel bar tape and I like the fact I can lay on the bars with my forearms without much discomfort. The new orange tape I want to put on isn't gel and I'm thinking I will need something under it.

If you have the tape already, the one without the tape is reduced to under $15.

That looks more like a Halloween costume than like something that goes on your bike.

I would stay clear away from it if I were you. I DID buy one and tried on my "then new" TCR C2. After a few rides with it on, I was really not impressed by it and decided to take it off. Well that's where the trouble began. Once you put it on, it does NOT come off. I ended up tossing the old bar and ended up getting a new bar instead.

With today's gloves that come well padded, I don't think this is necessary IMO.

Yea, but it's on backorder. Not sure how REI works; I may never get it.

REI is pretty good with backorders, actually, and I was looking at this. But after the horror story above, I may reconsider! I was also looking at something like these from Specialized:

https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqP...jsp?spid=13265

https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqP...jsp?spid=10018

https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqP...jsp?spid=10024

Does anyone have any experience with these? The first one is out of stock, but I'm going to try looking around at LBS's and see what they have.

No doubt. I took the tape off my Roubaix's bars and the bar phat. Man that tape is sticky...like really really sticky.

Well, it'll be going on a $25 Peformance Forte handlebar so I'm not too worried about that.

I put this on my touring bike back in the spring. At first I didn't like it because it made the bars feel too thick. The tape provided isn't the best either, never mind the fact that it's boring black. And the issues of the stickiness of the pads is going to be a problem if I want to change bars or remove a shifter (hint: use mineral spirits to remove adhesives. It's the only thing I've found that works.) But...

After riding 700 miles on tour this summer, I came home for the first time with all of the feeling in my fingers. I've never had that happen before! Usually after weeks of riding, I'd come home with at least 2, and sometimes 4, fingers that were numb and tingling. They'd stay that way for up to 6 weeks after I finished. But this time, I had absolutely no numbness. I even rode longer per day than I would usually since my daughter was much slower than I am.

Try them if you can get them on sale but be aware of the difficulty of removal. That's about the only problem I've had with them.

I like Bar Phat. It's great, long lasting, and when you change the tape, you can leave the pads in place so you can wrap with a cheaper tape.

For years I just double wrapped portions of my handlebars. Still generally do that, and now I also have FSA carbon bars to absorb road shock. I HATE gloves in summer. Works for me. The cushioning systems seem like a reasonable variation on my old approach. Handlebars 'too fat'? Ummm - not possible for me.

Hey me too - I was just saving the phat for another bar...
I guess getting generic double sided tape should work... yes?

I use the Fi'zi:k gel inserts and really like them. They are easy to remove and install and don't add that much thickness, just enough. I have it installed on our all our road bikes:

About $25 on sale, but cheaper if you LBS only carries the inserts without the tape. I hated the tape that came with the kit.

I've installed tennis racket overgrips underneath my regular handlebar tape. The tops of my handlebars were a little thin. Double-wrapping the bar tape made it too thick, so I wound two layers of overgrips underneath. Perfect diameter.

Can't say if its as cushy (or mushy?) as gel pads, but I like the feel.

Here's a link (a lot of tennis companies make overgrips... prince just happens to be my personal perference)
https://www.princetennis.com/product/...categoryID=248

Prices vary, but its usually $5-6 for a package of 3. 1 is enough to wrap either the tops or drops of a road bar.
