What Cyclocomputer is best for the money?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The wired Astrale 8 by Cateye for about 30 bucks. Very dependable and many people use it so questions, although rare are answered quickly.

Cateye astrale8 is decent low end computer. I use a polar 725 personally but put the astrale8 on our tandem just recently for my wife.

I have the Cat Eye CC-CD300DW Double Wireless which has both cadence and speed. I've had no problems with it so far - it's very easy to set up, and there are no messy wires to get caught up in things. I'm sure there are others which are as good. Hope this helps.

Love my Shimano Flight Deck, but the best bang for your buck, if you don't need gear or cadence bells and whistles...is the Cateye Velo 2. It goes for $15 from time to time at Performace. Got one for my wife's bike and one for my cross bike.

I need a low cost unit for the dedicated indoor bike on the trainer.

Picked up an "Astrale 8 by Cateye"

Of course, nothing is cheap in this country ! Paid $54.95 plus 15% tax @ the LBS. Mounted the sensor to the rear wheel.

Works...sofarsogood !

The Garmin Edge 205/305 has highly useful features, such as virtual training partner, which are unique AFAIK and well worth the premium price.

I have two Cateye Astrale8's. I really like the feature sets but was really sold on the customer support. I had taken a bad fall and broke the mounting that held the computer to the handlebars. One call to Customer Support with less than 2 minutes on the phone and they sent a full accessory set including a second set of sensors, wires, tie bands and a mounting bracket for free. Took less than a week. I was floored.

I like the Sigma 1200. Also wired, light and easy to install with rubber bands. I find the wireless are pretty unreliable.

I ride 20 miles a day..training for next years brevets and qualifying for the BMB and PBP. I need something dependable and very readable for my bad eyes!

I wish I knew exactly what I was looking for, but I've never had a cyclocomputer before. Any suggestions from someone who rides brevets would be very helpful!

thanks!

I use the Ciclosport CM 434 wireless. It has about 34 functions and an optional cadence kit if one wants it. I love the features other than no backlighting it is great! I paid about $106 for it and took minutes to install.

I think what you want is the "Best Bang for the Buck". There are gadgets for all of you needs. Here are the ones that I have:

Astrale 8:
Pros:
Dirt Cheap
Cadence

Cons:
Wires
Small Display

FlightDeck:
Pros:
Shows Gearing
Good display
Works with Brifter controls

Cons:
Expensive
Difficult to mount due to Brifter wiring

Polar S725
Pros:
HR, Speed, Cadence
Downloadable
Programmable
Altitude
How much climbing
Graphs & Charts
WearLink band has user replaceable battery

Cons:
Wireless - Loses signal
Cadence/Speed sensors - odd shape
Can only hold about 5 hours with of Data
Display is small and cannot customize

Garmin Edge 305 (Pre-Ordered) = I pre-ordered the 305 with HR, Cadence & Speed. The reasons that I ordered it, is because I like the Display, mapping, and Virtual Rider...Furthermore, it comes with a stem mount and did I mention the display. It is supposed to hit stores in January, I cannot wait until mine arrives.

Same here. Functions are easy to set i[ and to use. Includes altimeter, temp, % grade, feet of climbing and more for a very economical price. I've had mine a year and is extremely reliable. Got for under $100 on eBay.

Do you have an Edge? If so where did you get it? I thought that they weren't going to be available until early 2006. I am going to get one, but will go out this weekend if you can get it now.

WTH does AFAIK mean?

The Astrale 8 is very dependable, but the display is on the small side.

Since you're training for the long distance rides why don't you pick up one of the smaller GPS units on the market. They may not be as small as cyclometers but could keep you on course in some of the out of the way routes you're likely to be on.

Cateye Velo 2 is good... very simple (one button) and reliable. Available with several mounting options including stem mount (as is any Cateye). Only thing it's missing is max speed, but I've been wondering what that function is helpful for except as proof for your bragging.

Love my Cateye Micro Wireless. Accurate, reliable, wireless so no worries about water goofing up the contacts riding in the rain, inexpensive...

FTW! I have the wireless mount (no cadence) on my folder, and am acquiring the wired + cadence mounting kit for double-duty on my road bike.

This sounds intriguing. Have you used a GPS unit? Any suggestions on which product?
