Well, I started down the road to building up a steel frame bike.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, I started down the road to building up a steel frame bike.

I bought a used Lemond Zurich today and I'm planning to build a Campy Centaur bike around it. Now I just need the components and wheels.

Wish me luck, it's my first build project.

Hmm Centaur components huh? Which ones you need? I could hook you up on a CT front derailleur and a short cage rear both are like new.

That sounds about perfect. The Zurich was the peak of LeMond steel bikes.

I'd prefer Campy hubs, Velocity Aerohead/AeroheadOC rims, and 32 spokes.

FYI, Supergo has a few closeouts on Campagnolo. For example, Campy Chorus carbon brifters for $199. "Shop by brand" -> Campagnolo dropdown menu.

I was thinking of going with a set of Mike Garcia wheels. Aerohead Velocity w/Speedcific hubs. I was also toying with the idea of buying a pair of Chorus hubs and sending them to Mike Garcia to build a set of wheels around.

BTW-How is the Centaur grey finish for durability? I think it looks hot in pictures but wouldn't want to get it and find it's all scratched up and looking like crap in a couple years.

Dunno. I have no personal experience with them - I like shiny bits.
ISTR someone on this forum or RBR complaining about the grey finish. Maybe a search will turn something up.

For me, steel get's more real every day. Sounds like a great build project. Steel and Campy - got to love it.

I just finished a similar project only it was Daytona 10 speed, same thing. I hope yours turns out as well. https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/159175-new-old-bike-rebuild.html

I remember seeing that frame when you got it back from the painter a few months ago. Very nice!

I don't think this frame will need to be painted but I will wait until I see it to decide. I have been scouring ebay for months looking for a nice steel frame that wouldn't break the bank. I picked this one up for $275 which includes a matching carbon fiber fork and a seat tube clamp. I hope it was worth it...Hell, I guess you could spend $200 on a fork alone so I guess it was worth at least that.

Sounds good. Do you mind if I ask what kind of frame? As far as parts go I prefer Campy but Shimano 600 series parts are a real steal. Any 8 speed 600/Ultegra can handle 9 or 10 speed. If you can find a clean 7/8 speed bike with 600 parts strip off the group and reuse it on your bike. 7 speed wheel sets need a new cassette hub to handle 8/9/10 speed 8 speed wheels don't need anything to handle 8/9/10 speed cassettes. Barcon and down tube shifters for 9/10 speed are way cheaper than STI and last much longer. Good luck.

The frame is a LeMond Zurich made with Reynolds 853 steel. The rear spacing will accept 8/9/10 speed so I'm planning on going with a modern drivetrain. Headset is threaded 1" so I'm looking at a quill stem. I'm set on Campy though.

My first real road bike was a 1970s Motobecane Le Champion (Reynolds 531 double butted steel) w/Campagnolo Nouvo Record and Mavic sewup rims. I rode that bike for 7-8 years until it was stolen from me while I was living in Los Angeles. I've given up finding a similar bike and decided to just get a decent steel frame and build up a new Campy bike around it.

Well then Campy it is. Veloce and Centaur are best buys as far as Campy go. Keep on searching ebay for deals and be very patient. If you know what an item is supposed cost and see it for a deal on ebay Buy It Now, don't hesitate and loose, just hit the button. Good luck

I'm probably just going to buy a complete group online. I can get an 8pc 10 spd Centaur group new for $689 which includes crankset, BB, shifters, brakes, cassette, derailleurs, chain and cables. All I need then is wheels (Mike Garcia), seatpost, saddle, bars, stem and tape.
