Aero Helmets?

Which helmets are more/less aerodynamic than others?

Am I correct that TT helmets do nothing for safety, and are only for speed?

Is there a relatively aero helmet that meets the same safety standards as all the "normal" styrofoam ones?

I find it odd that people can buy $1400 aero wheels when the helmet has considerably more frontal area than any entire wheel... discuss??

Thanks,
B.

TT helmets that meet UCI guidelines

No

Yes

Look at areadynamic profiles, although areo wheels have less frontal area there is mire effect, not from the frontal pattern but the shape and laminar airflow...

I am sure someone who knows a bit more about mechanics will chime in here.

recently, someone actually posted results of a study that said an aero helmet has more of an affect than aero wheels.

check out the 4th post.

And aero helmets have to meet the same requirements as non aero helmets when it comes to safety.

To an extent, you are correct. The old TT helmets (2003 and earlier I believe) are basically fairings. I have the giro one the USPS team used and trust me, you do not want to take a spill wearing that. It literally is like one of those red dixie plastic cups. No protection whatsoever.

The newer helmets used in the tour have more protection.

sorry to resurrect this thread but 2 more questions...

#1 why doesn't everyone wear aero helmets? Am i correct in assuming that everyone would buy deep aero wheelsets if they were less than $300?

#2 which is the most aerodynamic "standard" helmet?

Thanks
Brian.
