Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

But the rear brakes barely do anything...the fronts do all the work. Does she really NEED new rear brakes or is this just something she selfishly wants?

Change 'em yourself. Pads/drums don't cost much, maybe $50 a set.

New wife vs. new rollers. Not a hard choice. Which brand rollers will you be getting?

In that case he would be getting a new car, and a house for his wife instead of just the brakes.

We get tires - expensive tires - and batteries for life if all services are done at the dealers. We just got brand new tires put on last week because we have honored this. I don’t want to screw it up now.

Incidentally, once pads are worn down, Passat rotors cannot be turned and still be in spec, so no shop will do this. The rear brakes on these cars play a large part in preventing nose dive on braking. And they wear sooner than the fronts. Just one of the design quirks. See if your dealer will install Axxis Deluxe organic pads - less dusty than OEM.

Back on topic, when I was in Performance the other day, they had a killer deal on their brand of alloy rollers - something like $135.

I will check into the pads thank you.
Plus, I will - will - be getting some rollers. If it's a late present so be it. But they will be GOT! I may find a better deal after Christmas anyways.

Are those as good as the Cycle-Ops rollers?

You could always get the rollers and ask the Mrs. to do the Fred Flinstone/Barney Rubble braking for a couple months

Definately pony up the xtra benjies and get resistance magnet, well worth it. The keys for those Passats are a trip.

This just STINKS!!!
Not only do I need to get brakes for my wife, the CV joint on my old 626 just went out - another 200 clams.

OK, who put "the whammy" on me? Coz it ain't funny now.

Thank God, I got all my shopping done for the wife and kids. I guess I can wait, unless any of you have a trainer you are not using. I'll pay shipping to borrow it through the winter months.

No it won't. Brakes aren't covered under warranty anyway obviously.

All the maintenance for the car needs to be done at the dealer or the "tires and batteries for life" deal we have goes ka-put. Brand new tires - including balancing and alignment - were put on the car last week and it didn't cost me a nickel. I guess I shouldn’t have said warranty, but ... it's sorta

So the VW is in the shop right now having brake pads put on and the Mazda is having a CV joint repair.
Merry Christmas!

Brakes are maintenance items, and it's most likely illegal for your dealership to try to force you to have maintenance work done at the dealership in order for your warranty to be valid. Google the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act" and do some reading.

Unless this is some special thing you subscribed to, like road hazard insurance or something, they should not be able to force you do to all your maintenance (oil changes, wiper blades, etc) through them.

If you drove less and rode your bike more, your CV joints would have less wear on them.

Sounds like quite the scam they're pulling there. How many batteries will you replace in 100k miles? Zero? One (maybe)? How many tires? Four? Eight (max)? Trust me, you don't want to keep taking it to the dealer once serious stuff starts breaking on that car. That whole deal sounds borderline illegal if you ask me. Hope you didn't pay too much for that "warranty."
