Anyone know how exactly this is done? I'm just to lazy to figure it out on my own...

I used to do this way back when. You need thin tape. Start one color one direction (clockwise) and the other color the other direction (counter-clockwise) on the bar, then "weave" them one over the other. Way back when, the tape wasn't cloth, it was some sort of vinyl and came in some really cool bright colors. You could make some very nice color combinations.

The other advantage was that it also made your bars a little thicker and easier on your hands. Cork tape was not very popular and was "very" expensive. The vinyl stuff ran about $2 for a roll and the cork was about the same price as it is today.

I used to use the same pattern, but in black and white. IIRC, it's Off the Front tape.
