Shimano R540 or Veloce Hub with Mavic MA3 Rim
Which is better the R540 or a built up campy veloce hub with mavic MA3 rim. The price assumed to be the same.

You can easily rebuild the MA3s. Not so much with the R540's rim design (spokes through the rim). They don't use it anymore for a reason. A well-built MA3 should gives you years for trouble free service and can be easily repaired.
