Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

travelling with bike - a few questions

I am taking a business trip at the end of February and am planning on taking my road bike. Since I've never brought a bike to a hotel before I've got a couple of basic questions.

I think I have most of the "How do I get the bike there" questions answered.

I'm more concerned with the once I'm there question.

Is the hotel really going to want me walking in and out of the Lobby with my bike and are they going to have a problem with me storing my bike in the room.

Anybody experience problems with this?

I've rented some condo's while on vacation and it didn't seem to be a problem to put my bike inside. At least no one said anything. If you are really worried about it, why don't you contact the hotel and see what they say?

I've been to numerous hotels before with my bike; some of them let you take your bike into your room and others don't. The ones that don't do offer to store them in a secure storage area though. I wouldn't worry about it, just bring your bike and have fun.

I've found that using a side or rear entrance is best, and wait until you've checked in. If they give you trouble, tell them Lance keeps his bike in the room!

I've done it numerous times. Check with the front desk first out of courtesy.

On a recent trip, I walked my bike daily through the cobblestone lobby of the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. Nobody seemed to care one bit. At the end of the day, after a rousing ride through Redrock Canyon, I took my bike up the elevator and into my room without a comment from anyone.

Of course Las Vegas is known for strange behavior.

Just march right through the lobby; don't make eye contact with anyone.

Let them know that "This is my custom $13,000 irreplacable bike presented to me personally by L.A. after I completed chemotherapy, and my lawyer brother-in-law told me to get the name, date of birth, social security number, employee ID and supervisor's name of anyone to whom I entrusted it. Please begin by spelling your full name for me." Five minutes later you and the bike will be upstairs in your room.

I've been to places that let me keep my bike in the room and those who didn't. I usually like to keep it with me, if possible, but factor this in. The cleaning people have to work around the bike. It is something that would not usually be in their way. What if they knock it over? A headlight, computer or whatever could easily be broken off. This is not meant to be negative towards hotel employees, but why create a situation where something bad could happen? Might be a good idea to remove the bits and pieces and put them in a drawer.

My experience in foreign countries (hopefully somewhat relevent) in little hotels is that sometimes they have a room downstairs where they will store it for you- it always seems secure. Riding new places is great, good luck.
