Wheels and Hubs Advice for Mercian King of Mercia

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheels and Hubs Advice for Mercian King of Mercia

Need some more help in building out my new bike.

I have not decided on wheels yet for my new Mercian King of Mercia (Reynolds 531 and yes it's new from Derby factory arriving late this week). I plan to buy the Campagnolo Chorus group, but had not yet figured out or decided on the wheels and hubs. Any suggestions? Is there anything special about spacing on rear hub required for these bikes? I assume rear dropouts are 130mm spaced??

I gotta lot of help here on Bike Forums on quill stems an stem length and where to buy Chorus group, so I thought I would seek additional advice on wheels and hubs to use for this bike.

Specifically - can I use standard 130mm spaced hubs?? I am assuming so, but you never know. Any King riders out there - let me know. What about hubs and rear spacing and what wheels/hubs do you use?

Thanks and Happy New Year !!!!!

It looks like, based on Mercian's web site, they sell campy wheelsets, which would be 130mm.

Are you getting the Touring or Race model?

What kind of riding are you planing to do on the new bike. Personally I like to start any new frame out with an old wheel set that I like from another bike. It give me an idea as to how the frame rides and whether I want a stiffer or softer wheel set.

My standard wheel to start with right now is an Open Pro rime with DT Revolution spokes laced to a Record hub I built up myself. I find this to be a good all around wheel that lets me know if I will want to race on a frame.

What kind oif riding? Day touring only. 35-70 mile rides on weekends, a few centurys through the year. Just recreational rides and large group rides. I'll be going to Spring BRAG in Georgia in April, an MS ride, the Amish ride in Indiana/Michigan in August, HOPE ride in IN in August, and MOKH in KY in September. My racing days are behind me.

I was mainly interested in the hubs - can I use standard 130mm spaced hubs on the King? I can't tell from the Mercian web site. Their built KOM page says they use a 135mm spaced hub on their built bike for "rigidity" but I am assuming I can use standard 130mm spaced hubs on my bike.

for that bike - only a handbuilt wheel.

Chorus hubs in 32 hole config. 3x both front and rear, classic, and good looking.

If you can get them get Ambrosia rims, a beautiful rim and lovely ride.
