Anyone ever race at the Portland Intl Raceway?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just curious. Friends that lives out that way (who are determined to have me move there) have told me about the track, and the bicycle races they promote. Sounds like a fun time. Would like to hear feedback, if anyone has ridden the track.

Only cars never bikes. It's a great track for cars and I suppose it would be a good bike track too. I know Laguna Seca rocks as both but it has some great elevation change and of course the corkscrew is a blast to decend.

Not sure where you're getting your info. AFAIK, there ARE bike races at PIR; I believe weekly during the season. I know a cyclist was killed in a freak crash during a race there last year.

I haven't but know plenty who have, including several forum members. Great 1.9 mile track, good organization and even the novice races are actually fun. Will probably try it this year.

PIR is a very cool track. Very safe. And the races are very well run and organized.

I highly recommend it for a new racer. There are enough categories where most anyone, regardless of their level, can have fun.

Last year, some group organized a short-track MTB course on the motocross track which was about the coolest thing ever.

My post was an answer to a question. Had I every raced a bike there..I posted "only cars never bikes" I didn't mean it as they don't race bikes there only that I had only raced cars there not bikes.

Fun races. It was a good place to learn this last year. I'm going to be doing it again. Maybe I'll be able to finish with the pack this year.

You realize, of course, you are way too good to race the public event...

Kind of you to say that but not ever having done it nor any race, it's probably a good place for me to start.

The PIR series was the driving reason for the Ironhorse - thanks to you Dino. Now, to get going on the training.

I was talking to my cousin about it when he was back for christmas since he raced this summer (won the august CAT1 series). He says it's pretty cool because the races have a sliding length scale based on how many hours of daylight there are. Apparently they can get pretty long/ difficult in the middle of the summer. He said the track was pretty good for racing on, although it was a little scary when the guy died (happened right next to him from what i understand).

I wonder if they have a "Heavy-breather' level for me? Or maybe a "Turns Colors" level. Either will work.

I would race... but I'm not going to risk laying down my steel bike there... Can't afford another one... so for the time being I will be content not racing... Though I would like to some day.

Might I suggest a 'horse or similar? With all the parts I had laying around, darn thing cost me less than $350 total. Won't see the Tete out there.

May not see the Tete anywhere.

Yeah...my problem is, I don't have much laying around... So either way, I would pretty much have to build something up. I do have a Trek that I could do a few mods to and ride I suppose... Its currently on consignment...but I doubt anyone will buy it.. Buy a few 9spd parts for it... maybe a fork...

Jakey -

Performance has the 105 equipped Scattantes for $699 on sale now. You can spend a bunch more, but you won't go much faster on a flat track in a peleton.

I mean, geez, if the thing spontaneously combusts in turn 5 for some reason, you still aren't out that much dough.

In case you all were wondering, this is the reason that the Junkyard Dog exists. No worries about scratches, dents, bruises and bumps. People take one look and generally give plenty of room. Heck, I may even bring out the MTB with slicks for one race this year.

at last years cat 4-5 race on Tuesdays there were some 20 yr old Shwinns. Lots of C'dales newer and older, and some serious bling in the higher cats.
