Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

www.bicycleclimbs.com

I've set up a website that displays informations for bicycle climbs using Google Maps, at http://www.bicycleclimbs.com

I have a lot of climbs in the Seattle area, but I'd like to get some for other areas. New climbs can be added by drawing them on the the map, and the system will figure out the elevation gain and come up with an elevation graph based on USGS data.

If you'd like to enter some climbs for your area, click on "enter climb" at the bottom of the page, and follow the instructions there.

GitaneRider,

Did something not work for you? If so, what browser/OS are you running?

Wow, thanks ericgu. I live in the seattle area on the eastside. I used to do Zoo Alp d Issaquah hill all the time in the summer. I've always wondered what the stats of it were. I think i'll tackle zoo hill again this weekend just for fun. appreciate it

Doesn't seem to work outside of the US [and maybe certain parts of UK].

Very cool!

If I register and log in, can I add climbs to the Cincinnati area? Can I add a topo graph from Delorme to the info or just text?

It doesn't work with Safari on Mac OS X 10.3.9. It loads the basic page and the "Region:" selection list, but the Google Map never displays and the "Climb:" selection list never loads.

On the same OS with Firefox 1.5 it almost works perfectly. The only thing that doesn't seem to work is the "Climb:" selection list. It loads, but with several blank entries instead of the names for the climbs off the Google Map.

The_Guru:

Unfortunately, I only have things set up for the US right now as the USGS topo data doesn't cover other countries. I might be able to add them in the future.

Soda:

Yes. After you register, go back to the main page and it will have an enter climb pick at the bottom of the map. It will tell you how to contact me - I need to flip a bit on your login before you can enter climbs.

When you enter a climb, the sytem will let you draw the path on a map, and then go out and fetch the elevation data from USGS. I have the capability to support uploads, but there isn't any UI to upload them right now.

If you have any problems, you can email me at Eric.Gunnerson@microsoft.com

Steve,

Thanks for the report. I don't know what it will take to get it to run with other browsers, but I'll take a look when I get some free time - at least as FireFox. The Safari problem is probably related to google maps.
