Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It will never change!!!

GRRRRRR!!!! While sitting at the pub after a meeting yesterday I happened to listen to a trio of ladies talking about a friend of theirs getting hit by a car. They were saying how they thought the driver would probably get a slap on the wrist. Well, much against my judgement I let my big mouth get the better of me and chimed in with..."well if your friend was on a bicycle the driver would DEFINITELY get nothing more than a slap on the wrist." Wehreupon one of the ladies said to me..."well you bike nuts deserve what you get, you don't belong on the road anyway." I suppose maybe THAT will teach me to keep my big mouth shut!!

Oh by the way...the woman that said that was about 5'4" and at least 250lbs (surprised?), so I guess we are stuck with this shyte...oh well.

Joe's Mill Hill Saloon in Trenton, NJ kicks arse,,,best soup in town and great beer.

Cheers,

Brian

I would have taken a mouthful of beer and spat it in her face.

She sounded like she'd be a really hot date. Any man would be proud to be seen with a woman like that. Why didn't you ask her out?

Oh cool! Another opportunity to make fun of someone less fortunate than ourselves!

I for one am glad you didn't go any farther. (apparently) That only increases her dislike for the rest of us.

(with as pleasant a face as is possible when looking at the humanoid version of a three-toed sloth, say) "World production of bicycles is double that of automobiles and has been since the 1950's. Your best bet is just to learn how to share the road with the rest of us Miss." (smile, wink, then go back to your soup and beer)

Most dipsh*ts, male or female, are so blindsided by actual intellectual content that they don't even know how to respond. Plus, I guarantee you that the next time they see a bike rider, they'll at least think about what you said.

Here's a link to my witty come-back data: http://www.earth-policy.org/Indicators/indicator11.htm

When confronted by someone like this, especially as at a stop light out on the road, my riding buddy will just laugh and say like he's joking with a friend, "You're talking gibberish." If the person keeps going he'll add, "Yeah, yeah and I'll bet you were one of those kids who never could learn to share their toys either? Come on, be honest...you were, weren't you?" He'll keep this going until the light changes. I've seen him laughing and calling out at the top of his lungs as the driver pulls away, "Aw come on. Don't be like that. Break the mold! Be a new you!"

On most group rides with the guy, like if we have a driver start to creep out of a side street or one who passes close and squeezes us, after a couple of beats somebody will echo up from the back of the paceline, "Break The Mold. Break the mold. Be a new you." Always good for a giggle.

What do you expect? There is a much higher percentage of bicyclists who hate "cagers" than the other way around. A small but vocal minority of bicyclists, seem to want drivers to hate them. One of the things that really annoys me is when I approach a 4 way stop, with a car coming from my side. Many drivers just assume I am going to bust thru the stop sign, so they wait for me. Instead of doing a track stand I have to unhook. Why do you think these people think I am not even going to slow down? Because it happens all the time.
The other day, at the lunch hour, on an extremely busy street, sometimes known as Restuarant Row, there were 2 cyclists riding along in the bike lane, except they wanted to talk, so they were riding side by side, blocking the regular lane.
The thing that offends alot of people here is that the city spent $2 million to build a hike and bike bridge over the river after bicyclists demanded it when a cyclist was killed on the bridge. Very few cyclists use it because they don't like the way it was designed.
While admittedly, both sides are at fault, some cyclists need to remember the Golden Rule.
I don't even need to mention Critical Mass.

I didn't see the need to go any further. The bartender knows I am a cyclist and one of the customers is a triathlete and they had enough to say to her without me chiming in with more. I had already caused enough trouble .

I already have a girlfriend...and she is more than enough for me to handle. By the way, my girlfriend is not a beanpole by any means, but she is also not an ignorant witch, and loves that I love riding. She just doesn't like me doing it here in Trenton, New Jersey.

Brian

Trying to change an entrenched, obese car driver's view of bicyclists is like trying to get Angelina Jolie to stay celibate. It could happen...in theory...

We are working on it as we type (lol!). She is in the process of selling her house and I am getting all of my documents together. I hope to do this before the end of summer. She has to get her business squared away so she can afford to have me come work with (for) her...setting up health insuramce and the like...When the time comes I won't leave any of you in the dark. I can't wait to get on the Waterfront Trail up there and ride. It is beautiful.

Cheers eh?,

Brian
