He's baaaaack. A January sighting of The Knave!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

He's baaaaack. A January sighting of The Knave!

44 and sunny at 10:30-ish in the morning...off I go on the Klein for a rare January ride outside.

About 12 miles in I see him coming at me, same bike, same bag on the back, but wearing a newer bright yellow winter jacket. I make an effort to sit up, take my hand off the handlebar and give him a big wave. He looks over, smiles and nods back! I couldn't believe it! What's this? The Knave softens after years of being a big old crank? Maybe my spanking of him three times on a single ride at the end of the season changed his outlook?

Then it happened...the story is always a good one when it comes to the legend of the Knave....

About 20 miles in I see the REAL KNAVE coming at me, grubby old jacket and all hunched over that flat bar mountain-like bike with his pith helmet on. Ah -HUH! That explains it. Remember last season I told you that the guy has a twin...a double that looks almost exactly like him? Well, the guy that looked over and smiled at me was the TWIN, not the Knave. No, the Knave once again, despite my big smile and a wave to him, never even looked. When he saw me coming he looked down and just kept going.

January 12th....and the games begin again.

I'm soooo glad I spanked him at the end of the '05 season, and so look forward to doing it again at some point in '06.

Oh yeah...the new heart rate monitor worked great. Big surprise--as the headwind goes up, so does the heart rate number. I was in the 150's for most of the ride, whatever that means.

And another regular was out there today too....someone I really respect from the past, seeing him riding often on my route. I call him Ponytail Guy for obvious reasons. I was being careful in a muddy area when I heard 'On your left' behind me. He eased by, jumped out of the saddle and bolted away. Dusted me. I didn't chase...don't have the legs yet this season. I simply admired the man's riding!

For me that would mean that I'm awake. Stupid racing heart rate. My kingdom for a normal heart rate!

Good story Hip. Looking forward to another season of "The Knave" (sounds kinda like a TV series, eh?).

So, did you wear your new jersey? the long sleeve version was quite nice too. $30 more though.

Again, it's great you are getting out. I'm just hibernating here in soggy Oregon. I've had exactly one ride on my new bike and the rebuild on another will be done soon - I gotta get to gettin' on the saddle.

I did not Rad.
If I wear that people are going to SEE it as my outer layer...and it was too cool for that and arm warmers only...but what the heck, it IS January in Wisconsin afterall.

The jersey fits perfect...and as they say...check's in the mail today (along with some other goodies for you).

I was afraid there would be no further Knave sightings until the snow clears. Glad you got out today and hopefully you'll get another chance to nail him some time soon!

Hip... I think the Knave is in love with you. You'll know for sure if he ever comes up and punches you in the arm, giggles and looks all embarrassed, and then runs away.

Dude, you need a little digital camera in your back jersey pocket cocked and loaded and take a pic of this guy for your confederates back here at BF.

I have snapped a couple of hot triathalon chicks riding the other way using this method...

I know because we were both actually trying to outdo the other only twice really now that I think about it.

I'll give him a 1/2 actually....

Remember he made a bonzai pass of me up the golf course hill....unannounced....placed me in a dangerous area of a narrow path....I backed off....and right after he took the point he looked back, then parked it. Bush league.

So when it counts, upon further review I'll give it:

3-Hip
1/2-Knave

yep, not bad, winter isnt over yet though

I was too busy to really enjoy it today, and was quite windy this morning for awhile.

Didnt see many riders out today though, usual commuters, at least the fair weather ones.
