Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

talking down price of bike?

just curious as how you guys and girls would go about talking down the price of a bike that you knew wasnt worth the asking price.

its a 2001 Specialized Allez Sport, full 105, w/computer, seller is asking $600, i think its worth no more than $500.........am i wrong?

I don't know but just tell them you will give them $500. If they really want to sell the bike they will take it...if you really want the bike you will pay more.

Don't negotiate with the seller until you see the bike. When you meet the seller (assuming it's an individual and not a store), assuming you like the bike, keep a poker face - don't show any emotions. Don't say anything nice about the bike (for example "this bike really fits me well"). Have $500 in cash in an envelope (with an extra $100 in 10s and 5s in your back pocket in case you need it) and offer this to the seller. If the seller seems reluctant to accept it, pause and wait for him to make the next move. If it's clear that he won't budge, but you really want the bike, step up your offer in $25 increments until you see signs that he might accept. For the most part, when negotiating like this, the less you say, the better.

To add to sprocket mans good advice; point out any flaws you can find and look real concerned.

For example.. find a scratch and say "Has this bike been crashed?" and then give a look like you have real bad gas or something. Also start lower than what you are willing to pay so he can talk you up a little too.

You could always be honest too. "Look it's a nice ride and I'd like to buy it, but it's only worth about $500 to me."

this approach has worked for me. if the seller is reluctant i offer him my phone number, say i am still interested if he doesn't sell, thank him and start walking away slowly.

I agree....new probably cost about $750-800 at the time. I'd say $500 max, if its in great condition.
